Udderly Smooth is the best. Been using it for a while now. I wasn't convinced that there was a real need, but having used it I have seen the light. Not irritation or chaffing what so ever.

You need to shave.
won't that just cause more irritation? Or was that a joke?
Hoops- Sudocrem as chamy cream? Really? I've used it post ride, but as a preventative?
Will try to get some of the udderly smooth stuff..

I use pure Shea Butter. A little goes a long, long way and it works brilliantly, both pre and post ride (e.g. if you have sores you need treating). Works out cheaper than dedicated chamois creme, yet chamois creme (e.g. Udderly Smooth) has shea+vaseline+fillers in it, shea being far and away the most expensive ingredient. Go figure! Final plus - no nasty skin reactions. I have some excema and it causes no skin issues at all. And girls tell me it causes no tingling, an extra plus if you're female. Well worth a try!

This stuff is pretty good from my experience you can get it in running shops. Ive heard a few people say the assos cream results in rashes.

and they have a sensitive skin version as well for a bit more £.

I hardly use cream with synthetic chamois.
If I use some, then it is cheap stuff from a drugstore: milking grease. No, we don't have cows and it's also not for my mrs.
Also works well: cod-liver oil cream. When I have skin problems (no open wounds) I use Calendula /Marigold cream. Works very well.

I never use chamois creme unless the ride is over 160k/100mi. Never had trouble with Assos. Sudocream has always come highly recommended to me as an alternative.

You can use whatever you want on whatever type of synthetic chamois. Personally, I've never gone for the rubbing it into the chamois thing, as I think it gets absorbed into the core of the fabric like a sponge, doing your skin little favour.
At least if you put a barrier/antiseptic cream on your skin, even if it's partially absorbed through the epidermis, it's still on your side in the fight against infection/sweaty abrasion.

Do you not have any tips for home-made cream akin to your DIY energy drinks?

I use moisturizing cream from Lush, Karma being my favourite. You pay a lot extra for a chamois cream. The Lush stuff lasts for ages and it is a revelation to take shorts off after hours on a bike on a hot day and actually smell OK. I prefer to apply generously to the skin before putting the shorts on. Putting it on teh chamois uses a lot of cream, takes ages, and putting them on afterwards is a bit odd. imho.
Bit of an 'Oooh Errr' subject, but couldn't find anything on the search.
I've found recently that Assos cream REALLY doesn't agree with my skin, and it's making my life pretty miserable!
I've used that Nature's Kiss stuff before and it didn't cause irritation in the same way, but wasn't as good performance wise.
Anyone got any gooch-cream recommendations? ;) cue bad jokes etc etc
