yes but you need to work out the BCD of the chainring (it's the distance between the bolt holes) and be sure the new ring is the same

So do you think I'd notice a fairly marked difference if I went to a 48T chainring?

Be sure to buy a 1/8 or 3/32 depending on your chain

Also, state the nature of the issue in the tread title, don't just call it Newbie Question, ff's sake.

No point in getting yourself all aggressive and upset.
Hello,
I'm new to bike mechanics. Do not break my balls suckers.
Riding a single speed freewheel. I have a Sugino messenger 44T crankset and my rear sprocket is a shimano 16T. I want a slightly harder gear. Can I get a larger 'crank ring' separately (possibly the wrong terminology) without changing the crank/pedal arm (again, don't diss me if i said it wrong) and the bottom bracket?
Thanks for any help.
