  • I know many people here are aware that there are fake Gumtree ads, and it's been discussed before, but here is another important cautionary tale:

  • Farking hell.

  • fcuk me that is bad he is lucky to be alive

  • Yep just read this and was going to post. Scary stuff.

  • Thats fucking crazy. Avoid!

  • This seems to have been for a car, where the 'buyer' turned up with a load of cash, but it's possible for a bike, too, even if there would be smaller sums involved.

  • Sounds pretty bad but turning up to a meeting like that with £5K in cash....?????

  • A modicum of wariness would protect people from the majority of these scams.

  • Absolutely. There is nothing stopping criminals doing this. Buyer beware, its so dodgy.

  • That's terrible and I'm glad the guy has survived against the odds, but I'm with ma3k in that a bit of common makes a big difference.

  • Shocking, poor fucker. With that kind of cash it would make sense to bring somebody with you?

  • thats how i feel when i meet up with some of you lot.
no really. heal up. and OMG at open heart surgery onsite! (i guess it was kinda open already)

  • People need to get their brains into the 21st century.

The traffic volumes of sales sites, the anonymity of the internet and the ease of propagation of these type of scams are exactly the reasons scammers gravitate to these sites.
People should be diligent and careful with putting their money and safety on the line.

The OP link was a shocker but if you think about it a logical progression of scam behaviour on the internet. Criminals realise people will put themselves in compromised situations in search of a bargain and will exploit this.

You can't trust anyone on the internet.

    This is very sensible advice

  • blimey....

  • lots of scams on gumtree. inquired about a two-bed flat that seemed too good to be true. the person asked me to bring the deposit when i go to inspect the place. wtF?!? they then came up with a follow up email asking me to just send the deposit via western union.

  • You still haven't paid me that deposit....

    thats a shocker...

I steer clear of gumtree, unless its signing up work colleagues to personal ads....

  • Gumtree should be shut down. Its 100% stolen gear/scams/perverts, the whole thing is just a seedy black market.

  • What I just can't believe, what with the violent nature of the offence the two men mentioned arrested in the story were released on bail?

  • Tony: Okay....
Toad: Okay... so you got the money?
Tony: Yeah, you got the stuff?
Toad: Sure I got the stuff, but I don't got it right here with me. I got it close by.
Tony: Yeah well I don't got it either, I got it close by, too.
    Toad: Where, in the car?
Tony: No, not in the car.

    My exact thoughts too.

  • Perhaps so they could visit the guy in hospital and say sorry?

  • Don't use gumtree. That guy is damn lucky but who the fuck turns up to some deal in east london with 5k in cash?! Thick.

  • Use Gumtree, just treat with caution. It's no different to a classified section in a local newspaper, or a card in a newsagent's window, expect for it being easier to place ads.
