I wonder why this isn't on the main page, rather than the Surrey one? If the guy who was attacked was a copper, or a father out with his kid, I bet it would be. It seems like put the word 'cyclist' in anything and the world doesn't give a shit

just saw this on bbc1, got about 6 seconds. shit.

....wheras 'Police Fining Cyclists RLJ' got longer

This is clearly an attack carried out by complete scumbags.
However, an alternative point of view regarding the reporting is what has the fact he was riding a bike got to do with anything, other than to sensationalise (or otherwise) the headlines? A man was attacked by four youths, he happended to have been riding his bike at the time.
It's a bit like a 'Father of two attacked' headline. Is the emphasis on the fact the person was a father supposed to make the crime appear worse than if the victim was single and had no kids?

Horrendous & bizarre - West Ewell is not exactly the ghetto
I think the description of the victim as "cyclist" seems more a factual statement, leading people to assume this was a random/unexpected attack on an entirely innocent person.
Hope he makes a speedy recovery.
After what I have read on this forum of similar attacks, I am more careful/vigilant on passing groups of youths

It's about as close to leafy Surrey as Croydon is. In fact Tolworth just to the north is an absolute dump.*
- apologies to anyone from Tolworth

There is a lovely leafy bit of ewell... but it's surrounded by shit.
Lots of bored teenagers with nothing to do and no where to go (both figuratively and literally)... tolworth is indeed a shithole.
(I've lived in most of the shit areas around there! And a couple of nice ones too)
Only just read the article... he must have been pretty fucked up to be taken to st georges, kingston and epsom hospitals are both closer and have a&es!

Oi!
Ok. I admit it's not the most salubrious of areas.
A Time Out guide to London described Tolworth as that part of Kingston-upon-Thames that looked, geographically, like a flaccid penis.

and just yesterday I read this account of a cyclist's encounter with vicious thugs in east London - I've an enormous amount of respect for the fact that the writer was back on his bike (albeit still bandaged up) within two weeks of the attack...
"One attacker became, shall we say, rather overzealous with the robbery, and began hitting me directly in the face with what I later realised was my own D-lock, as heavy and as damaging as a hammer. Insult added to injury indeed."

I have to buy a mallet today from my local DIY shop as I'm doing some work over the weekend. I'd love some little cunts to try attacking me on my bike on my journey home tonight! WHACK!!!
