  • Does anyone have experience of having had paint/restoration work done by these people? Packed the Gazelle frame off to them on Friday just gone with lots of instructions, original decals, original head-tube badge, new period head-set and cranks (courtesy of Jos at Tour de Ville) etc. and am jolly excited about getting the finished article back in a couple of weeks.

    :-)

  • I know a few guys here in Bristol who have had work done there and the quality is top notch (if expensive) I am sure you wont be disappointed.

  • is that the Gazelle advertised a few days ago? It looked good. Heard only good things about Argos :-)

  • one of the better re-finishers.

better than modern Bob Jackson re-sprays... on par with Mercian.

  • They replaced the down tube on my Orange P7 and repainted it a few years ago, and I was very happy with the finished article. You should have nothing to worry about.

  • Cool, sounds really promising, thanks.

@kam - no, it's the Gazelle frame I've had for just over a year (one of the things that led me to this forum in fact) and have been very slowly gathering parts for.

  • i went to get a bent stay fixed by them a couple of months back and they did a great job, looked good as new. Got to have a sneaky peak at their work shop too, there were some beautiful restoration jobs and the rack of finished frames was exquisite.

  • They do a decent enough job, hard to contact them by email though!

  • They rebuilt an early eighties fork for me - a Paganini - ie one fork blade was cracked so they put two new ones on - very neat and professional job if very fractionally thicker and so less elegant than originals - I do think their paint jobs are pricey though - I use a local car sprayer who does a frame with shot blast for £30...

  • Its not just their paint jobs that are a bit pricey, their frames start at £950. It doesn't stop me being a big fan tho. Both my bikes are made by Argos i love them but i could never contemplate buying them new.

  • TBH I think the price of a custom built frame from Argos reflects the time and effort that goes into it.

As with many things in life you get what you pay for.

I am a proud owner of a Mercian Custom winter bike and a Custom Argos TT frame and feel I got fantastic value for money from both.

I was down at Argos about 3 weeks ago to get my winter machine resprayed and the bikes they have on there racks ready for shipment back to customers, after refurbishment are delightful.

  • told you : )

  • Have had two frames renovated by Argos in the past 12 months. Can't recommend them highly enough. Both had additional braze-ons, drop-outs re-spaced and decals supplied. Not cheap but perfectly done and finishes have stood up well to daily use.

  • Sent my Peugeot to them via my LBS last year and the initial result had to go back. Some major imperfections for me and although they offered a discount if I would accept it, I said no and they re-did it, totally.

Very happy with the final result, but surprised their first attempt had been cleared.
