you should probably keep the camera, but instead print your own photos off and sell then to make the £200

well, that's another thing... nevertheless, i should get rid of d70 as i don't need two cameras, i'm not that serious to have "backups" :)

It does not need to its a DSLR, all video will do is drive up the price and wear your shutter out.

Well said I can't see the point either.

DSLRs with video functionality do not use the mechanical shutter to expose each frame of video - when shooting video an electronic shutter is employed.
Put simply, video on a DSLR does not wear out your (mechanical) shutter.

Well said I can't see the point either.
The point is that you can shoot video with interchangeable 35mm lenses onto a large sensor - which previously was unheard of under £50k - this blows even professional video cameras out of the water when it comes to low light shooting, depth of field and latitude.
It is nothing short of a revolution in the video market.

Its nothing but a way to cater to the armature market but make pro photographers pay for features they will never ever ever ever ever use.

I have a video camera my friends have used it more than I have. I would prefer to pay for a quality camera then a camera lacking in quality as they have added a video feature which wont be used that often.

Its nothing but a way to cater to the armature market but make pro photographers pay for features they will never ever ever ever ever use.
Pro-photographers are not compelled to buy anything they do not want, there are numerous high-end cameras for sale that do not feature video functionality, which I am sure sell well and will continue to do so.
The convergence of the two technologies - DSLR photography and video functionality was inevitable - the manufacturers could stymie the joining of the two no more than mobile phone manufacturers could refuse to include a clock/watch on their products.
As soon as 'live view' started to become commonplace and cheap to implement - capturing the video stream became trivial.
The video functionality of these cameras are used professionally - although I am sure you are right in that the appeal amongst the 'armature' [sic] market is a driver of sales too.

Amateur Porn and the money to made drives the market.

Adding video (or adding anything) does not necessarily mean a reduction in quality, but like I said above there a lots of cameras without the ability to dump the live view stream onto your CF/SD card out there at the moment - which will likely continue to sell very well.
I'm selling my Nikon D70 + Nikkor AF-S 18-70/3.5-4.5. Well used, no box/manuals, but still lots of life in it. 200quid o.n.o., pm me if interested.
PS: RV, delete this if you feel it's inappropriate :)
