I was thinking the same too, but realise that it can be a hit or miss coming from Halfraud, as they're usually likely to be build up very shoddly.

Carrera Subway Zero £199 @ Halfords
a contender for the Unipack? i'd presume this would be better than unicack dough

a mate of mine had one of those, but the geared model.
his awesome power during his balham to waterloo daily commute managed to tear the BB area of the frame to pieces. I've never seen such a poorly made frame.
though I am sure they've changed it by now, he also got a no questions asked replacement. (whole bike)

honestly, i wouldn't pay 200 for that ^^^
if they'd let it go down to 120ish it'd be a great seller and halfords would still be making a fair profit.

I've recently got one. And it is good, I was lucky enough that the guys at Halford's were student's who were actual cycling guys so they built it up way better than I could.
Beats what I've seen in Evan's at a more expensive price, for what I want from a bike anyway: I'm using it as a commuter and it is perfect for that, which is its target market afterall.

My lady had a Subway 1 before we got together and got on well with it and it is consistently reviewed top of the heap in Cycling + etc when the cheapo bikes get their turn. Should be much better than the Unipak and a good budget buy for a starter London bike.

I would, providing that I put it together instead of the halford's 'mechanic', I think it's a pretty good value for a simple fixed wheel bicycle.

forks look a bit out of place but it looks good value for 199. you could probably take the stickers off it, split it and sell it all for 300 on ebay.
-

does this come with both cogs ???
i just spotted it on the halfrauds site, shame its not got calipers tho -
• #16
Not bad for a simple commuter bike. As long as its well built up, not much should go wrong.

i just spotted it on the halfrauds site, shame its not got calipers thoYes. It's a 42 front, 15 fixed, 16 freewheel. I've had mine for a couple of months now and it's going well. The bars are really wide though - could see that putting some folk off.

the subway is one of the most bodged together bike in existence. Not just by the mechanics who put them together i might add. Does seem mighty cheap tho.
-
• #20
i like wide bars as i have a nasty shoulder injury, no collarbone socket and major ligament n muscle damage
is it better value for money than a se draft/ draft lite ? -
• #21
did they just go with those forks 'cos they couldn't find anything more awful...?
-
• #22
it looks almost barspinable
-
• #23
I reckon that's worth £200 and I'm sure Halfords do a free safety check on every bike. ;)

I use a Subway 1 as my pub bike - picked it up on eBay. It is a great little bike - light and agile, and I've had no problem at all with the parts - pretty much the same spec you'd get on any entry level mountain bike up to £400. I wouldn't bother buying a new one though. Just get one for £50 on eBay and convert it to singlespeed if you want. Tape it up and it could be a Cannondale Bad Boy, which will mean people will think you're a cnut and thieves will steal it at the first opportunity.

If the cranks are the square taper they will be 1/2 way decent, not so if they're the powerspline model. Give em a week, made of cheese.

might be of interest to some - this is actually not a bad bit of kit, Truvativ isoflow cranks and the wheelset has Formula flip flop hubs - I have had a quick burn on one, and brakes are good, frame is solid, and good geometry for commuting, plus has mudgusrd/luggage mounts
at the same price as a unipack it's a great deal for a cheap pub bike or commuter
