That doesn't sound too bad for a month. Could you go to a local dealer and lease one for a month?

buy an old banger pray it holds up ..... top gear bought cars for under a £100 quid admittedly they all ended up in cluds of steam and splattered most roads between here and dover with oil but it looked fun !
there'll probably be loads knocking around after that govt scheme that takes old cars off the road -

£500 works out as £15ish a day, no?
Not bad, really.
Cars are damn expensive. Work want me to buy one. I really don't want one. Unless it's free, runs on a clean, sustainable energy source and smells of maple syrup, and parks itself and comes when I whistle, etc.

If you're a Streetcar member, you can hire a VW Polo for £635 or a Golf for £695 a month. Pretty good deal, as it includes all petrol w/ no mileage restrictions. Oh, and includes congestion charge too.
If you're not a member, you can join for £50 a year.

I'd buy a second hand car. Just sold (payment pending) my vw polo from 95 for 450. Had it for a year without any problems, payed 600 for it, so costed me 150 (+ insurance, tax etc of course). If you got some money to part with for a while, I think you'd have a hard time losing 500 on a car for say 1500, which would buy you a reliable Polo / micra etc that should easy hold up for a month

Work want me to buy one.
If they want you to travel surely they have to provide the means?

Work want me to buy one.
Why?
With my last job I was expected to travel and some people couldn't get their head around my having a license but no car.
They got used to me claiming train tickets and cycle mileage.
Not really their concern how I travelled, so long as I got there.
Unless you are expected to make house calls all day, or travel into the middle of nowhere with piles of equipment what's the impetus?

I worked in a job where I was required to travel up to 30 miles per day with a laptop and a stack of files. I was about the only one who didn't have a car. My travel times were much more but I was getting paid for it. Plus I claimed all my expenses.

Does anyone know of a car rental company that do a deal for someone looking to hire a car for a month or so, ideally with a branch in south east London?
All the usual suspects (Avis, Hertz, Enterprise) want to charge £500 or more, which feels too much.
Thanks.
