Compact cranks [110BCD] and square taper BB

Posted on
  • Hi...are there any 110bcd ISO cranks that will fit a Campag square taper BB....the front and rear mech will be Shimano......Otherwise, i will get a Compact with an external BB and sell the Campag Square taper BB!

  • Hi Hutch...are you talking to me again?

  • Didn't know I wasn't!??

  • Mirage 9spd also available in compact 110 BCD

    http://www.gbcycles.co.uk/eshop.asp?wci=product&wce=CSC06MCT01&desc=CAMPAGNOLO+MIRAGE+CT+CRANKSET

£25, 172.5 and 175 only, but in the delicious 48/34 combination.

  • I have looked up all the threads and please correct me if i am wrong

Firstly my rear mech will be Shimano.....and my gear changers are Ultegra bar end shifters......

so: the Mirage or Xenon chainset.....requires according to Geoff Butler and ribble a CT [Campag, i presume] front mech......will that work with a shimano rear mech and Shimano Ultegra bar ends?

The Stronglight Impact [aka Sugino] requires a JIS bb....and the Campag one on my new frame is ISO.....are they not compatible?

It will work fine with a shimano front mech, they just note that for all Campag set ups you should use the CT front mech in contradistinction to the regular Campag one.

You might get away with putting a crank which needs a 107mm JIS BB onto a 111mm ISO one, in theory. People who have actually measured the relevant parts with good quality instruments realise that theory is BS as far as cheap square taper fittings go, the tolerances are bigger than the supposed difference between ISO and JIS.

  • But at the end of the day you might wonder why you wanted both Campag and Shimano on the same bike?

To annoy snobs; freaked the hell out of the weightweenie crowd when I showed them my Look (French) with Campag (Italian) chainset, SRAM (USA) shifters, and Shimano (Japan) cassette, but it all works perfectly well both functionally and aesthetically.
