How perfect can lug lining even be?

Exactly what the post says, thickness, Irregularities, does variation mean laziness or handcrafted? having an arguement over some lug lining

I have just been for a drink with an old friend (publisher) who made up the name 'Kaiser Chiefs' and gave it to them - he also tied to foist the name 'Guernica' (the Spanish/German/Italian fiasco) on my old band a few years back, we were too powerful, we resisted, we were having none of that art-rock nomenclature, and then went on to fail, unlike the Kaizer Chiefs, who are now millionaires.

But . . . I still have my post count, even if my figure has gone a bit.

Lug lining's pretty shit these days cuz all the old guys that used to do it so well have shuffled off to the big framebuilder upstairs... Not much of a problem tho', is it?!? BTW The original lug lining on my 50s Mercian was shockingly bad...

yeah but that's in the olden days, when people had patience and pride in their work. nowadays, you're lucky to find lug lining that isn't done with a sharpie.

What matters is what lugs you're lining. Plain lugs don't deserve it, fussy lugs do. I really like the middle style^, when its on the face of the edge of the lug. Apparently the last one is the rarely seen, uber-lining, though.

Lining the join between contasts is also good, I reckon.

Mercian's lining job (between contrasts) was pretty avaerage on what was otherwise a perfect paintjob, rather disappointing. Don't think it was a marker pen though. I reckon with this sort of detail, if you want something done properly ...

i'm fairly certain that my mercian luglining was done with one of those metallic marker pens. it wasn't great.

and while we're discussing mercian finishing, there were some seriously dodge paint areas on that frame. granted, in less visible areas, but for the price (and reputation), i'd expect perfection.

I am always pretty suprised at how poor some of the lug lining on modern BJ's, Mercians and other bike is - a decent Pinstriper should be able to do such a clean job on a lugged frame in under an hour, and yet it looks like they have got the YTS trainee to do it with a marker pen most of the time

teddy, you may be right actually re: marker pen. I can't complain about my paint, from them, though. Seems to me, a bit like with Mr Vaz, you can get patchy performance from everybody, even the reknowned people.

It can be very good or not very good. The lining on mine is very good, but not perfect, because it was applied by hand and I'm happy with that.
