What about a threadless bottom bracket? It could work it your thread is dead and if you are not too fussy about the choice of the BB. Would also probably be cheaper that re-taping the shell...

half meter long lever to screw in a BB!!!! Something is very very wrong there.
I normally do it with my fingures, then use a spanner to nip it up.
You have f*cked the threads, the frame is toast. Use it as it, then throw it away.

well i dident relise bb tapping sets were this much :O.... http://www.sbrsports.com/470-412635
so its probs worth just buying a new frame after the bb you got in there now buggers up. -

Evans on the cut retapped a bottom bracket for me- Record CF BB in a Ti frame, when it came out if left quite a bit of the cups in the threads.
They charged me £12.50 to run a BB tap through there and clear all the crap out.

That's facing
Facing and re-taping are different.

I thought facing was making sure that the faces (hence the assumption on my part) of both sides of the bottom bracket shell were parallel?
Likewise I had assumed that passing a tap through the threads of the bottom bracket to make sure they were cut correctly/empty of corroded on crap was to re-tap the bottom bracket?
What is re-tapping a bottom bracket?

Yup, that's facing, and tapping is (re-)cutting threads.
If the frame's any good, then it's probably worth getting the threads tapped when the current BB dies. A good shop or framebuilder will be able to do this.
If the threads are completely knackered, then there may not be enough metal left to cut new threads into. However, all is not lost - on steel frames (might work with ally too), a framebuilder can cut a slot in the BB shell, crush the edges of the cut, and braze it up again. This effectively reduces the internal diameter of the BB shell enough that the framebuilder can then re-cut new BB threads. -

Facing is removing crap/burs/rust from thread
Taping (or re-taping) is cutting thread where there are none/missing/damaged

fail. you face head tubes as we as bb. you tap/retap bb, gear hanger, etc.

Fail?
You can face anything you idiot.
Engineering existed before you got a job in bike shop.

i presumed he was interested in what you can face or tap on a bicycle. maybe should have left out the gear hanger as it is a fixed/ss forum. job in a bike shop? i wish. try pub.

hmmm thanks for the replies guys, i think when this one dies il take it into the LBS and see what they say, gizmond, fuck that, im not putting it in the trash, it will take much adversity to stop me trying on this frame :D

Argos here in Bristol will ream a BB shell and fit a new sleeve which is threaded for £65 - the sleeve can be brazed or glued in if you do not wish to disturb the finish... This is the best solution for stripped BB threads. But slitting the BB edge, closingup and brazing does work if done carefully; its just rather messy... though a lot cheaper.

hmm thanks for the heads up hilary, argos are meant to be very good . . . we shall see . . .

which side is fucked? been having similar problems, if the fixed side then apparently you can have it re-cut in italian threading as this is a little wider. I've installed an acor threadless square taper with a decent portion of threadlock and 50 or so miles in all seems good (am touching wood as I type!!!!)

Dose any one have or know a good bike shop that can re-tap my bottom bracket shell? superted / shop 14 did a great job on my BB, re cut thread the bb had been badly mangled and it came out lovely
andypancake is a friend of ted's and can be contacted i think
they also have fixedgearlondon website through which they can be contacted -

uninstalled my bb as it was creaking and went to fit a new one but the non-drive side cup wont screw in properly, have tried fitting the old one and that doesnt want to go in anymore either. Im thinking the threads are damaged as it goes in about 5 turns and then gets harder and harder to turn (with bb tool)until its impossible to go any further.
How much did that cost you dicki?

You can get hold of SuperTed via http://www.tedjamesdesign.com/.
Hey Guys,
So my BB shell in my bike is a bit screwed, do you reckon my LBS might be able to sort this, i mean it took me ages with a giant (0.5 meter long) heavy duty wrench to screw my BB in, i mean its in now, and i can take it out, im pretty sure it screwed the BB threads when it went in, but im not to bothered, it stays in so thats the important thing! but when i come to fit another new BB in would it be best to see if i can get the threads retapped? or is it just a case of that frames shagged and i need a new one?
