(Well-Stocked) Shop Recommendations for Fixed...

  • Got myself a frame:

And a set of wheels - Open Pro CDs on Ambrosio; now I need the rest- stem, bars, BB, chainset etc

Can't be arsed with flying around everywhere for bits, can anybody recommend a well-stocked shop to get all these, preferably somewhere I won't be treated like a c***t (although I don't mind that if the price is right). I usually use Shorter Rochford (North London) but they don't seem to cover the gearless set...

First fixed for me to be used for winter mileage and commute; I'm hoping £300 - £350 will cover everything?

    Any help much appreciated.

  • if only there was a forum on the internet full of useful information like this, where one could use some sort of a search function to access said information...

    (nice frame, btw)

  • Go to Tour De Ville and get yourself sorted silly.

  • Yes, yes, I have been doing. Seems Cavendish or Brixton be the favourites round here, I'll give them a call, see if they can do something special for £300

Could do, I work in Hackney Wick so just a minute away. Thanks.

  • BLB have some nice stock of 2nd hand quill stem (as well as seatpost) too if TdV don't stock the one you want, BLB is only a couple minutes ride away from TdV

  • Not sure what these places are charging for decent bits; does my £300-350 budget seem fair enough? Bit clueless in the realm of NOS, single cogs and pre-2000 cycle gear in general!

  • £350 is a shitload of money. You want everything gold?

EDIT - what kind of things are you actually looking for (i.e. campy throughout, njs, cheap?)

Glad to hear it! No real preferences - the old me would've said Campy all over, but I'm over that now... as long as it's durable, and, I guess, the lighter the better - so probably gold-plated then.

  • go ti ;-)

  • To be honest, you could easily spend that much if you buy everything new and retail, and obviously depending on the crankset...

    how about something like:

    Record headset - £35
Miche Advanced - £100 with ring
    Good cog - £15
Stem, lots of choice - £35
    Drops - £45
    Bar Tape - £25
    Brakes - £35
    Cables - £10
    1 Lever - £25
    2 tyres - £40
    tubes - £6
    Seatpost - £40

These are really conservative retail prices but it comes in around £410

What I would pay (buying of this forum, ebay, second hand etc):

    Headset - £25
    Chainset - £75 with ring
    Good cog - £10
Stem, lots of choice - £20
    Drops - £20
    Bar Tape - £10
    Brake - £25
    Cables - £10
    1 Lever - £15
    2 tyres - £40
    tubes - £6
    Seatpost - £25

    = £281

You could go up or down by 25% and be fine.

    Anyway just my tuppence

    • keep budget for favourite saddle
  • Thanks Kam, great help. I have the original seatpost- very scratched, and weighs about the same as the frame. Also, saddle, tyres and tubes I've got. Should be fine then with that amount - some shop's gonna get lucky this weekend! Milkybars are on me....

  • hey give retro_di_corsa a shout first. He's got lots of great stuff (I am biased having got 4 bikes worth of kit off him!)

  • Oh and don't forget pedals!

  • Go to Tour De Ville and get yourself sorted silly.

    +1

  • £25 for bar tape?!

  • £25 for bar tape?!

Brooks leather? £30! careful when tensioning that!

  • What I would pay:

    Bar Tape - £10

    That Fizik tape is great!
