Age old Raleigh BB question

  • Hi everyone i'm new to lfgss and wanted to ask for some help please.
I have just bought myself and old raleigh frame and am doing a first time conversion to fixed. I've read loads of times about the 26tpi and issues surrounding replacing the bottom bracket but am still confused. could anyone give me a definative answer as to what replacement bb to buy or what replacement spindle length and type i need to get the correct chain line? The bb shell measures 70 or 71mm. Ive stripped the bb down and the axle measures 135mm in total length and the middle bit of the axle measures 55mm the drive end measures 46mm and the non drive end 33mm.
any help would be greatly appreciated

  • oh god

  • Search for the Transmission Database.

  • thanks -sorry if everyone is really sick of this question

  • ive looked through the transmission data base and sort of understand what it all means but how do i know if the bb will fit into a 70mm raleigh shell with 26tpi?
and it isnt clear to me what spindle length will fit between the cups(55mm) if i chose to just replace this? (the cups and bearings are fine and running smoothly)

  • Are you sure it's 26tpi? I have an old Raleigh and having read about the raleigh threading was dreading it when the BB starting wiggling... until I found it was the standard 24tpi instead.
    this article will help: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/raleigh26.html
and about chainline, this one will help: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html

I'd mostly ignore the chainline issue though, because it shouldn't be much of an issue, the main thing is that the bb is not too wide or too short that the cranks touch the frame when tightened on.
I see you're in newcastle area so if can come to recyke y bike ( http://www.recyke-y-bike.org/ ) you should be able to get a suitable bb for it

  • If it is 26tpi, these guys sell replacement cups, bearings and axles in all sizes:

    http://www.freemanscycles.co.uk/

Web ordering didn't work for me so I gave them a call - they were helpful and sorted me out.

  • Ta mate (o.t.t) ill come down t see you in the next couple of days

I dont think the frame is that old as it had the pump pegs on the top tube- but cant find what model year it is on the web -the serial number on the seat tube is NA9055448. I'd insert pics but dont even know how to do that, how useless am I! (ps thats rhetorical)

  • thanks just checked out freeman cycles and they have a 5S spindle with squre tapers for the raleig its 70 mm and 125mm overall length will that work??

Ill still pop down to recyke y bike to see if its a 24tpi and get a new complete bb if it is, but if not ill go down the 5S route.

Thanks everyone i seem to be getting somewhere now
