Which wrist watch what?

Posted on
  • I've had a look through the search and only come up with the £2 watch thread, which doesn't really answer my question (http://www.londonfgss.com/thread13314.html)

So; My fiancee would like to buy me a watch as a present for our wedding in two weeks' time. I would like a vintage number. No chronograph chunky cased bebezelled type, just a nice slim, elegant, swiss, silver sort with proper numbers rather than markers or romans and either a leather strap or the really close sort of woven metal bracelet befitting of a gentleman around the hundred pound mark.

This is the closest I've seen so far as an example:

So what does one call a wristular embellishment of this sort, and where might I find such a thing?

  • Have a look here. Some nice examples!

  • That's the one I was after. Search fail. Thanks!

  • you'll be struggling at around 100 notes for vintage - there's a little watch shop on st john st, farringdon [opposite the benugo's coffee shop] that has quite a good selection of lower range vintages

or go for something modern but a bit retro, you can pick these up for about 130 [might have to sell one of your coffee machines!!!]

  • i have a 60's oris that i may part with (even have the box somewhere) i'll did it out and take a pic tomorrow if you think it may be of interest
    (will swap for grinder)

  • Wayne, I'll have a swing by the place in Farringdon this week, Cheers.

Mr Smyth that would be most kind if you could post a pic.

  • Not swiss but....

IMHO a nice watch doesnt have to be expensive, but it does have to be mechanical (not quartz) ie it must be manual wind up or automatic.

In europe in the late 60's the invention of the quartz watch polarised the market in such a way that affordable watches are now all quartz, and only swiss expensive watches are mechanical (Rolex, Patek, Omega etc).

However, in Japan there is still a thriving market for affordable mechanical watches, both Seiko (my favourite) and Citizen, plus other makes like Orient make great quaity mechanical watches, but for some reason they dont sell them in europe. Obviously with the internet you can get them.

www.chronograph.com has loads of nice models and I have always had great service from the guy that runs it.

This is quite an exotic looking piece from the above website, but they have hundreds in all styles.

Vintage seiko divers are also realy nice, if you want somthing older, there are always a few on ebay.

  • Mr Smyth, I'll take it- this ok?

If not, let me know your price.

  • i'm waiting on bombcup to get home from work and see the pics.
i need a burr grinder for espresso. that's a £35 blade grinder. the watch is worth a bit more than that :-)
if bombcup isn't interested i will entertain offers for the swiss timepiece.

  • It's actually £19.99 from Argos- first google shopping hit.

It is of course Bombcup who has first refusal, I shall stand down until he has returned from work.

  • Have a look here. Some nice examples!

    check ALL threads :)

  • Mr Smyth that is a handsome timepiece. Please PM me the price if cash is acceptable as unfortunately I have no grinders I can part with at the mo.

    Chapeau.

  • Also check out the retro shop in Notting Hill, I got a great Mappin & Webb 1930s for £100.

  • omeaga seamaster ftw...!

  • got mine for 160! bargains to be had (although i shoulda read it better)
