Restoring an old brooks

  • found an old brroks on a rusty roadster, and am restoring it. It had three chrome coil springs, which I took off, because they wert fair old heavy. I have a fair bit of experience in leatherwork, and just about managed to re-mould and restore the leather (cracked and horribly out of shape - 30yrs in a barn without being used), but some clever bugger stripped the threads on the tensioning nut, meaning it is quiate floppy, and the leather sits on the rails when pressure is applied by one's rectum.
    any ideas?

  • I have been there and got the T-shirt, albeit with a Brooks B90 that is 90 years old next year. The inelegant solution is simply to stuff some neatly-folded old fabric (bit cut out of a towel is best) between the leather and the metalwork. There is a guy in the vintage bike world who can repair these but it is not cheap.
