  • My missus wants to head to the beach for her birthday (Not Brighton) and I was wondering if there's anyone who's been to somewhere nice that has a good smattering of restaurants and nightlife of sorts...

Any help would be appreciated, I was thinking around Whitstable but that's mainly cause I like the ale

    thanks

  • Camber Sands / Rye?

  • Sandbanks in Poole Dorset is really lovely, the beach there is stunning, other than that Fistral Beach in Cornwall is really nice, but a long journey I guess.

  • Scarborough's alright not too bad.
Wouldnt recommend Fistral beach unless you're okay dealing with crowds of chavs. :)

  • Whistable is lovely, has great seafood and nice beer - but you'll be struggling to find any nightlife apart from maybe a pub quiz - nearby Canterbury has lots if you can stand all the drunks students - although at the moment, it should be quiet until October.

Croyde is lovely too, we have relatives down there so been there and done it kinda thing... cheers though.

ah cool, I suspect the evening will be taken up by a nice meal somewhere after a couple of local ales

  • +1 for whitstable

i'm off to southwold in a couple of weeks....

you have an unusual idea of what constitutes the South East. As for Scarborough.

Blackpool has it's charms. The East coast of Scotland is beautiful too. Of course Brazil is hard to beat for beach and nightlife but if you want to be a little more adventurous then Antarctica is on the up and up.

  • At low tide there is a beach at Charlton on Thames near the gravel works.

    That's nice.

Bournemouth although not south east is still only two houres away so not much difference to lott of the Kent beaches.

    That's nice.

he's looking for somewhere to lie down, not for a tree to climb up.

Is that one not full of shopping trolleys?

  • If your budget can stretch to it

To my gf there for her birthday last year, I can still do no wrong.

And you get to go on the worlds only sea tractor!

  • I forgot the beach in Edinburgh, though there's sharks there apparently (didnt stop me wading in the waters :P)

But it isnt south east. Dunno why I said Scarborough though. Reading fail

  • Folkestone.

Lots of pubs that shut at 11pm and two clubs that are infested with horrible little herberts and squaddies fighting.

    +1 for whitstable

Whitstable is lovely as Clefty and Damo have both said, only downside is that the beach is entirely made of pebbles.

The Whitstable Brewery is a must though, really good beer and if you time it right there is an Oyster Festival.

    Folkestone.

    Really?

  • Whitstable Oyster Festival.

    July 18th - July 25th.

What's with everyone taking trips to my native Suffolk recently? Head down to Aldeburgh and get some fish and chips from there, best I've ever had :D

  • Took my daughter down to Broadstairs for an evening last summer. Had a lovely meal in a restaurant called IIRC Jules Verne. Oops, crap memory, just Googled it - http://www.phileasfogg-restaurant.co.uk

I had the Barbara-Ann Lamb and it was delicious and reasonably priced.
Nice beaches there plus Joss Bay nearby.

Last time I went to Ramsgate there was some nightlife to be had but I was too pissed / tired to try it having sailing round there, setting out early in the day and then eating / drinking loads way too early in the evening.

  • West Wittering is a beautiful beach, a bit more South Central than South East though
