Broken chain

Posted on
  • A friend of mine recently (i.e four days ago) bought a brand new Genesis Flyer. Cycling home last night the chain broke sending him crashing down onto the cross-bar (with predictably painful results) and leading him to question whether this is a common occurence. I told him it's never happened to me! Has anyone else had any problems with this?

  • Chain installation error is the usual cause. It's VERY rare for a chain to "just break" due to a manufacturing fault.

  • slack chain ? chain possibly too loose ? came off over a bump ? wrapped itself around the hub and locks up the back wheel

  • He said it broke, I assumed the break caused the crash but good call. Who knows what kind of random silliness people get themselves into :)

  • I assume he bought it from Evans? They can't build shit...

  • Halfords?

There's already been a thread about halfords not putting bikes together properly hasn't there...

  • I've worked with a bunch of Evan's mechanics, almost all of them really nice people and all quite technically sound. Would trust a ride built by any of them.

  • I snap chains periodically as I do not change them until they die.

  • I've just heard from my friend and asked about where he bought the bike - an LBS where he lives. He chose them specifically because they are local and he liked their attitude. We'll see whether that attitude remains when it comes to sorting this problem out.

Apparently the chain snapped and got caught between the wheel and the chain-stay so there might be some damage to the chain-stay. My friend said that provided the only damage is the chips out of the paintwork, he'll not be too worried, but if the chain-stay is bent...

I didn't think about the slack-chain issue, but I would have thought that the bike should have been in perfect working order when it was rolled out of the shop. I'll post again once my friend has taken the bike back this evening.

In the interests of balance, I once had a wheel built by them that was a fucking disaster.

  • haha

    lovely sweeping generalisation there....

  • Not really, just my experience....

Evans are the main reason I went ss/fixed

  • don't forget pisti hates everything and everybody

maybe it was a unipac chain otherwise he'll be racing chris hoy at the next olympics ! what size are his legs table legs chair legs or tree trunk legs

  • don't forget pisti hates everything and everybody

No, just cockney(or African) kopites that wouldn't know Anfield from Hackney Fields

  • i can say that there is at least one brilliant mechanic at Evans

would trust him with my bike/life

  • The trick is probably to treat them as separate LBS's that happen to have the same name.

Read really good things on here about a couple in particular.
