26" track wheelset

  • I'm doing up the mrs' bike, to make it SS. She currently has a not very nice front wheel and a 3-speed SA rear. So the spacing is pretty much 120.
I was thinking of track hubs, SS cog, some commuter 26" rims.

I have no idea who would sell these at a decent price. I "could" make my won, though I have no idea of wht rims to buy and suspect that after getting the wheel tension checked I'd be better off buying from someone else. Suggestions?

  • look up archie wilkinson, they have cycle speedway wheelsets pretty cheap, 26" and ss i think.

    pretty local too...

  • Thanks for that!
Amusingly I may use them on a different build, not sure they will work on my wife's bike as hers is a 571 (mtb 26") while Speedway use 590 (26"*fraction, the old 3-speed size). If I can change the brake height by 1cm that could solve the problem, though in the future I would like to upgrade her frame (need to find a source of light step-through steel frames) and would rather have the option of the more prolific 571 sized parts.

  • If you're going for pre-built wheels, you also have the option of getting a normal mountain bike wheelset, either with a rear cassette hub and a singlespeed conversion kit, or with a threaded rear hub and a singlespeed freewheel.

With the former option you'd have a huge choice of wheels, anything from cheap shite that costs less than a night out on the piss, to expensive professional featherweight bling that costs more than you earn in a month. Due to the 135 spacing of cassette hubs you would have to open the rear end of the frame up a bit, which is only really an option if it's a steel frame. Otherwise you might be able to remove 15mm worth of spacers so it'd fit, but I doubt you can do that with a cassette hub...

With the latter option you just need to get the rear wheel re-dished slightly (you can easily do it yourself in about ten minutes) and replace the large drive-side spacer with a smaller one. Smaller choice of wheels, but if you're dealing with an aluminium frame then this is probably your only other option.

Alternatively, bring me some track hubs, rims, spokes, nipples, a bottle of Dragon Stout and £20 and I'll build the wheels for you.

  • we have some nice 650c NOS mavic unmachined clincher rims in stock, for anyone who's interested. i think they're 351 or something to that effect, either way: double wall, eyelets, CD (i think) and pinned join. off the top of my head.

  • i think i mean the 650c for the tyre diameter. i'm fairly sure mtb rims are 559. these are mtb diameter and 650c. in a similar way to the fact 700c is 29" in the off-road world.

  • 650c are iso 571mm, so bigger than 559/mtb, smaller than 590/650a or 584/650b.
I did consider 650c, but my wife would rather wider tyres and 650c normally top out at 28mm.
