  • I recently upgraded my chain from an old KMC Z-510HX to a izumi eco and ever since i have had a stupid amount of chain noise. Before my ride was ultra quite? I've tried shed loads of oil, different tensions...nothing seems to work. Both chains are 1/2 1/8 and all the components on my bike are 1/8..any ideas????

  • new chain might need just a bit of time to bed in with old cogs, they will have worn with the old chain

  • Pilky, thanks for the reply..the chains been on for about 10 weeks!

  • ... oh

  • I have a similar problem on my iro running an izumi super toughness, its been making a racket for weeks now and shows no sign of stopping.

  • izumi chains are loud

my guess, try to remove all the grease as well as possible as my izumi chain had this sticky grease on it in the first place, re lube and see if it is quieter

there are other threads about loud izumis

also the title of the thread is wrong, since the chain is new the bike is somewhat irrelevant from whether or not it is a noisy chain

  • Swap cog and chain at the same time or use different chain.
    Wear earmuffs.

  • Flickwg, thanks for the tips. I only put Langster in the title as i thought someone might suggest something to do with chain lines and thought it might be relevant. Think i might find a different chain...any recommendations..preferable a quite one!

  • kmc are the standard chain and they were quiet for me

    halflink bmx chain

never never wipe off factory chainlube, i find this is the bestest stuff and tends to last the longest.

KMC i find are usually loud, although my new izumi is still too new to notice.

  • My KMC/ surly combo is disturbingly quiet.

  • I'm switching to 3/32 for the next build... too much freaking noise.

turn your hearing aid down! :p

  • I'm practically deaf and with no hearing aid... and it still sounds like a tractor.

  • what did you say?

  • Ah, you're deaf too. Splendid. Then we can sit in the corner at the bar and grunt at each other safe in the knowledge that we could never say anything out of place as we wouldn't be able to hear each other.

  • i might as well join you two then.
    izumi's are noisey full stop!

  • As Hippy says, you should get a new cog if you're changing chain. I've had this happen to me before and the chain made a fucking racket. New cog and viola! Silent (ish - it's also an Izumi chain).

Though, I think the silence thing is overrated anyway.

  • Would rather not replace my cog as i splashed out on a E.A.I superstar. Think i might just go for a hkk vertex chain although i have an old spare nickel plated chain i could use......whats the benefit of nickel plating?

  • nickel plating = harder wearing

  • I set up my boyfriend's bike for him (he must be desperate if he's letting me do it!)
and there seems to be a problem...
We bought a 1/8 rear cog and a 1/8 chain but we're using an old bianchi chainring that's been kicking around our flat. Not sure where it came from.
Anyway, the chain's all oiled up and he went out for his first ride on the new set up this morning... but the chain is really noisy, almost as if it's the wrong size or something.
So here's the question: how can I tell if the Bianchi chainring is compatible?
Or could it be something else, like maybe the chain line is out? or it's too slack?
    Thanks for any help!

  • it'll be:

    bad chainline.
    worn chainring.
    too tight/too slack.

if it's a 1/8 ring it'll be ok, if it's a 3/32 ring it'll still be ok, but if it's old and worn and you are using new sprocket and chain..then you may have a problem.

if the chainline is ok, and the ring not too worn, then it should quieten down after 100 miles or so

  • does he like the wheels? came out good i reckon :)

  • yeah, he's so pleased. So am I. Means we can ride about together now. Cool.
I'll have another look at the chain issues when I get home. I think the chain could be a little tighter but we might need a half link. I'm a little nervous of removing another link in case it makes the chain too short...

  • Yeah what they said^^ ... new chainring probly best start jools... Did you put your own oil on a new chain? There wasn't any need for that, the stuff they come with already on em is usually just right. Might have an effect if you did. Also, I just switched from an EAI cog to a Phil on me Geoff Butler track and things improved a lot.

There are lots of variables. Best solution (everyone here except Velocity Boy will slag me off for saying this but here goes): switch to 3/32" instead of 1/8". Chain will be silent!
