you should get a professional respray
i think mercian do this
would be worth it on a nice frame -

it's and early 90's/late 80's frame and there are loads of fades etc in the paintwork.. it would cost an absolute fortune to get it done professionally. Bit out of my budget.

I'm looking for similar advice. I want to keep the original paint job but remove the odd spots of rust then I guess clear coat it to prevent further rusting. I was thinking very fine grade sandpaper/ wet & dry...

I had a scratched Pinarello frame, which I had treated and restored. It was one colour and the paint was matched perfectly. If however the repair is part of a custom fade my sprayer won't do it without doing a whole respray. If the rust spots are all one colour, even if different, you'd be OK. He charged £30.

Who's that, Paul? Exactly what I want done with my Dyna-tech...

Maybe not ideal, but if you took the frame, as it is to Vaz, he may be able to copy the paint-job and decals... wouldn't cost that much, but the paint quality wouldn't be great (would look great, but would chip easier than a Mercian paint-job for example).

Really? That sounds like a steal! Who is this guy, where is he based and can you PM me his contact details?
I there aren't any rust spots in the fades, they're all in the solid colours (red and a kind of pearly white).. If anyone's interested it's a red version of this frame thats on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Eddy-Merckx-Columbus-SLX-Corsa-Extra-road-frame-57x58_W0QQitemZ170347097664QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Bikes_GL?hash=item27a97a6e40&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1688%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50#ebayphotohosting

thanks mate - I'll give them a bell next week when my new forks come.
Got a merckx frame I'm building up as a project but the paint work is in need of some love. The guy who owned it before me has obviously tried to spray straight over the surface rust, so I think I'm going to have to wire wool/sandpaper it down and match the colour.
I don't really want to strip it and take it to armortex as the paint work is quite complex and lovely. There's only a few areas of rust that need sorting (bits on the top tube and a couple of spots next to the bb. I've got some replacement merckx forks on the way (mine are a little bent) that need to be colour matched aswel (should I get these guys done properly? I don't really want a powder coat finish)
Basically I'm looking for advice and suggestions - or if anyone's got any good links to guides for this kind of thing. cheers
oh, and yes - I did try the search, all got was "look at my rad powdercoat" or "I did this with car paint" type threads.
