Advice on period (-looking) rims for vintage Viner track bike

  • Hi

My latest acquisition has been a Viner track bike. Currently looks like this:

    ![](http://i.ebayimg.com/15/!BUmjiJ!BWk~$(KGrHgoH-EMEjlLlt44QBKOUiNBZGQ~~_12.JPG)
At the mo, its full original campag, including the wheels, which are record pista hubs laced to campag 'ypsilon' tubular rims. Planning to keep everything as is, except maybe the wheels.

Crass as it may seem, I'd quite like to get some clinchers for bombing this around london, so have two options:

    (i) rebuild the wheels with clincher rims using the original hubs. If so, I'm wondering what rims would suit - at my best guess the bike is late 70s (the frame/spec is similar to this one, including the star cut outs on the lugs...http://www.cicli-berlinetta.de/ciclib_bikes7.html)

(ii) Alternatively, in the interests of saving a puppy's life, I'm thinking about a new wheel build specifically for the road. Advantage being I can save the tubs for a rainy day when I finally get my arse over to herne hill.

In which case, I'd probably go for phil wood hubs as they're bomb proof, but again the question is what rims might suit best...can't seem to find any campag clinchers from that era (if they even existed?), the atlanta '96s might look ok, but maybe a bit deep (and pricey). I've got some nice 80s FIR silver semi-deep rims on my gios tt bike, but I can't find those anywhere anymore. Anodised deep-Vs might be a bit flash for these purposes.

Any suggestions on rims, including offers for sale (rim or complete wheelset), let me know...

    thanks

    M-X

  • I had a similar issue, wanted clinchers, semi aero which would look like more like tub rims - went for Campag Omega V's in the end - I think they look lish!

  • very nice build...those rims look spot on. where did you source them from out of interest?

    Cheers

  • bloody hell both of you nice bikes!!

  • I got 'em from campyoldy, expensive but worth it!

    thanks - I'll take a look

oh and I just found your old thread about this, starting to lean towards a completely new build, and save the hubs for the track (saw the photo of that mashed up sheriff star, and I felt rather sick...)

  • Well, that's the only photo I have ever seen of a failed c-record track hub, and it surfaces every time there is a discussion about building with them. Campy also made a road version of the same hub, and I think their quality is good enough to ride on road, as long as your wheelbuild is good and you're not bunny hopping potholes and dropping kerbs!

I think yours are the pre 1984 version, so there's no worries about riding on the road there, having even more metal in the flanges. I believe the pre-c-record ones were forged, and the c-record were forged and then milled, hence the different finish/worries about strength.

If you really do want to ride you campy/tub combo on the track then just go for a budget london street wheelbuild like mavic CXP 22 on system ex hubs

  • bloody hell both of you nice bikes!!

Thanks! I won't say how much I paid but it was a bit of a steal to be honest...hell it was daylight robbery :)

  • Buy the wheels that Jayloo is selling, and remove the MIche logos.

  • cool I'll check those out, thanks

  • bloody hell both of you nice bikes!!

    Cheers,

Mine is a labour of love - only campagnolo and cinelli parts, all from late 70's early 80's have paid far too much for some bits and got others very cheaply, have spent 950 in total so far, still need seatpost, chainring and pedals!

  • so i'm leaning toward omega Vs, but might try tdv to see what they have...any recommendations for where/who i should go to for building these up? BLB want £25 a wheel (ouch!)

forum search will come up with many options cheaper than 25.00 for both

  • I like Rigida's box section wheels. About 17 notes each.

    +1
shallow box section always looks chic

  • thanks for all your suggestions guys.

to throw a spanner in the works this guy went with deep anodised rims on his (specifically Araya Super Aero, so likely tubs)...i was planning on picking something like this (prob silver velocitys) up anyway for another bike of mine, so could possibly save some cash and kill two birds here.

What the consensus - too deep for this frame/vintage?

  • linky no worky

  • blogspot dont allow hotlinking of pictures, you have to save the picture then upload it again pain in the arse

  • Two really nice bicycles in this thread.

I have the Mexico '68 rims, which might fit the bill for something a bit deep and bomber. You can also get them from campyoldy. However, as coppiThat says, a nice box section rim looks the business.

  • Thinking the exact same thing for this.

So today I got some rigida box section rims and a pair of Miche pista hubs should have them built by Friday,I also bought this for the Wife for a single speed which has a brand new set of Vredestein white wall tyres on which I am going to nick.
The Guy took the tyres off when it was new and put some thicker ones on for his wife which they wanted to keep.

  • M-X (and others), I am contemplating selling my track wheels. NOS Atlanta rims to DA High flange hubs (28 hole) and Sapim spokes. Front is radial, back is an 'eye' pattern. Built by Dirty Dave.

They are in very good nick, done under 200 miles, run dead straight, some light wear to the brake surface of the front one.

Is it something you are interested in? pm to discuss. Not sure about price, probably around £225?

  • i sold a pair to a mate in leeds for 60quid... and despite seeing that ebay thing i would not have sold them for anymore... they really aren't that super!
