Is this safe?

  • I've just fitted some forks with a slightly-too-short steer tube, so short that only one clamp bolt on the ahead stem is actually clamping it, but the bolt in the headset does grip the starnut etc and its all fitted fine.

just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this, or if anyone knows if its safe enough to ride normally.

    thanks

  • Not too sure m8, the stem is not supposed to be more than 3mm above the top of the steerer tube. :)

I think you can either (i) use a lower stack height stem such as a Thomson X2, or (ii) cheaper way, use a BBB ahead stem extender

It is not safe in current state ! :D

  • ^ Agreed.

  • C2, that extension thing is genius! getting one. thanks dude!

the reason i posted this thread is i keep having horrible visions of my stem pulling off... absolutely no way i wouldn't hit the deck.

  • any other opinions? just want to know if its alright to ride until i get that extender. cheers for any help

  • its like unprotected sex with a stranger, you will probably be ok once or twice, as long as you stop at the right moment.

  • pifko youre clearly a man with a strong stomach,i trust you with my mechanicals any time, not that i get any

  • max, i wouldn't trust it buddy, too much torsion could be dodgy. change it back until you either get a lower stack headset (best), or an extender.

  • just don't try wheelying

  • the star nut bolt won't dom anything to hold it in place. it will snap very easily. I wouldn't go anywhere on it.

  • As above, it ain't safe, don't ride it.

Look for lower stack headset and/or lower stack height stem to sort it properly. Or that steerer extender would do the job (wouldn't be my first choice though).

  • cheers for the suggestions guys, for the record the fork steerer is about 15mm too short.
for the time being i'm just going to ride it as is and keep an eye on it. everything seems tight and fine but nothing permanent. i think i'll go with that steerer extender, genius!

  • Try and find someone to thread your forks then use a threaded headset stem.

I'd be carefull using an extender on a short steerer make sure you've got a good enough grip on the steerer, from experiance it doesn't always work.

  • How did you get on with this in the end Max?

After fitting a different combination of parts I've found myself in a similar position (albeit slightly less precarious as the top bolt is providing some clamping - just not as much as I'd like).

  • it's been completely fine. haven't had a single problem, although i have been checking it every now and again to see if anything's moved etc. and making sure the clamp bolt is tight.

i still wouldn't advise it though.

i'm sick of ahead, thank fuck my new frame is 1" threaded

  • Ahead ftw. Quill stems are for big-glasses wearing satchel-carrying backward circle erection getting ladyboys.
