For small quantities of stuff like speaker wire - or anything relatively inexpensive - I usually email people looking for quotes on large-ish orders (which of course will never be placed) - been doing it for years, titanium bolts, alloy bolts, (audio) cable, batteries, paper, pens, weird science-y crap like thermal-paints . . . basically any cheap shit.
Make an enquiry about a large order - include your name and address somewhere (don't be blatant) - and watch the samples turn up a couple of days later - often without even asking. You need to make the email sound legitimate - and make any request for a sample appear as an afterthought - or even leave it out all together.
This sort of thing (if I were after speaker cable):

Hi there,
I am looking for a quote for the following of your products:
2200 x 4 metre lengths of XXXX speaker wire
1100 x 3 metre lengths of XXXX speaker wire
1100 x 2 metre lengths of XXXX speaker wireThese all need to be pre-cut to length and be reasonably accurate - we don't need them to be millimetre accurate, within a centimetre or two should be fine. All cables need to be in black.
The order, if placed, would need to be met by late July (currently July the 28th, but this date may change) and likely be repeated on a 6 month cycle.
All the best.
XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXX Audio/Video, XXXXXX address XXXXX London.
P.S can you forward me the name of who we should contact to source some samples in 3 metre lengths.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Most sales reps would not think twice about throwing some samples in the post - if they wanted the order. It's evil I know, and I should have better things to do with my life, but someone needs to plough the edges of reasonable behaviour.

Evil, yes, sneaky, yes, small time petty internet scam, definitely, it sort of becomes a sport, see who you can charm out of 8 x 2 inch brass hinges for the shed door or 12 x M6 alloy bolts in anodised red - with a single well aimed email.
One other thing I stick in - that I suspect may help - is a (fake) email tagged to the bottom of your own email that appears to be something sent to you - that you just left there - you know like if you get an email from someone, you might see a email that was sent to them tagged onto the bottom of the one sent to you . . .
Like this: (let's suppose the company you are contacting is called 'XXXX Cable'.)

I have found a couple of places that stock pretty much what we need, I think they all do it in black.
Maldon have said they can get the order done by the 28th but pricey as always, not sure about Cambridge Audio, also
Kate said try XXXX Cable who sound pretty good as well, not used them before, they have it in black, not sure about the price
though, probably need a quote from them first.Speak later
Steve.

Subject: Who's sorting the cable ??Steve, just got the dates, everything needs to be with us by the 28th at the latest, I would stick with the figures we discussed until we know more.

Plus one. Use solid core stuff (UTP), but make sure its not got a PVC inner jacket (bad dielectric properties apparently). Hell, I'll give you 10m of the stuff if you can be arsed to cycle to Brixton. Use it as is, or if you are a massive geek you can strip out the inners and google some braiding patterns to reduce RFI and improve sound quality. acknowledges own geek status

Lovely soft-touch plastic and bloody great thick copper cable inside. A nice hint I got from a BBC SM (recording engineer) a few years back when I was building a studio.
I need about 3 meters of good quality speaker wire. I'm pretty skint at the moment and the good stuff is pricey and only comes in amounts that are way more than I need. Any one have some sitting around they would trade for beer or a minimal amount of £?
