  • This should make Hippy happy...

The photo's below are of my Conti Force, a rear specific tyre on my road bike.

A friend took it for a spin and did a small skid in the wet and this is the result:

Is it reasonable for the tyre to throw such a large and deep chunk of the body off after just one wet weather skid?

I have really liked the tyre in terms of grip, feel etc, but am worried that the above pictures show a fundamental weakness in the design.

Or I could be worried about nothing- opinions please.

  • thats one mammoth piece of tyre taken out. .

  • probably happened to skid on a piece of glass..

but, Like I've said before, conti's quality control is more wayward than hippy's sex life.

you don't know what you'll get from one batch to another.

  • just destroyed my first ever conti sports contact. Must say it was a pleasure fucking up that tyre.

  • As I said I could get the same again, or maybe a GP4000.

What would people recommend instead of a Conti?

  • arse!

for a moment i thought this was a tribute to the three johns track - death of the european

    as you were..

  • Vredestein Fortezza.

  • Manc Ronnie- for roadbike use, not Rad Skidzzz on my Fixie?

EDIT As they are £45 each I'm assuming not.

How good are they at resisting p_nct_r_s?

  • Deffo for road use, I don't skid so can't comment on their suitability for that. Prob not great I'd imagine. Great puncture resistance and you can get 'em for about £22 each from ribble.

Or maybe the Vredestein Fiammante at £13 each.

  • Vredestein Fortezza.

    +1

  • As I said I could get the same again, or maybe a GP4000.

    Utfs! ;)

  • I've normally used these as I went through a period of liking coloured (racist ?) tyres

Recently bought a set of black (institutionally racist ?) ones, and they look great, minimalist sidewall graphics much like the Schwalbe Ultremo.

Those SLs look pretty race orientated and I wouldn't suggest you use 'em as general usage tyres.

The Quattros look good and the Fiammante are good value for a commuter bike.

  • These are for the road bike- it only gets taken out for the odd long fast ride.

  • just destroyed my first ever conti sports contact. Must say it was a pleasure fucking up that tyre.

    How long did that take?

    12 minuets?

  • These are for the road bike- it only gets taken out for the odd long fast ride.

SLs possibly, but all my bikes (4) have Tricomps and they're fine in all conditions, even the occasional bit of off-roading !

  • Bought the Tricomp, fingers crossed.

  • Despite the Hippy's cont-hatred, GP4000 are immense tyres. I bought some to see what VB's dedication to them are about, and truth be told, they hardly ever punctured, except for when the nasty winter grit (rock salt) was laid. GP4000S and GP4 Seasons are excellent, but the GP4 Seasons tyres wear faster, and are designed for rainier, muckier weather. Expensive though, and other tyres from other manufacturers are obvious options.

  • i currently use conti GP4000s on all my bikes. im big fan and ive yet to have a puncture.

i dont skid much as i mainly use the brake, but i reckon i would be better off with a bigger tyre on the rear of my fixed.

  • Well I'm giving the Fortezza a go, I think I'll take the Conti Force with me to Trixie Dicks and see how quickly it can be utterly destroyed.

  • Hahahahahaha (not at you Dammit, at Conti)

    Conti tyres are shit.

  • Conti tyres suck arse. Big time.

Don't waste your money on them kids.

  • What would you recommend then Hippy for the CF road bike that is only taken out for long rides?

I'm happy with the Maxxis Refuse on the day to day bike.

  • Michelin Pro Race 3s. Or Veloflex for the ride quality. Or the new Vittoria Corsa CX with the 320 tpi carcass. All are good quality racing tyres.

  • Geez man.. don't you read all those fantastic comments I make on tyre threads? tut tut

Take a guess at my preferred brand...
