Possible Docklands Ride

  • Just gauging interest for a possible ride.

How about a ride around the docklands area stopping off at key historical points culminating in a visit to the Museum of London in Docklands. My missus works there so could get a really good list of places to visit and structure it like a tour with maybe some sort of guided tour of the museum, recapping all the places visited and why they are/were important to London. I dunno.

    Thoughts?

Also, there's a rather swanky wetherspoons (oxymoron I know but it is right under Canary Wharf) with a really big outdoor bit so there'd be no bother getting a beer/cider after.

  • sounds good

  • add me to the list

theres a wetherspoons by surrey quays which is kindof near

  • sorry thought you were asking if there were any

We've done it for the past two years. It's a good route. I've even got a list of Historical facts I can give to you so you can expand on it if you want.

  • Nice one - my sort of ride - so long as period costume is not compulsory!

Yeah Tommy, I'd seen that one but didn't know it was a factual/learning stuff type of ride. Didn't want to double up or steal someone else's idea. Not that this ride wouldn't be for fun as well, it's just since my gf started working for that museum I've been a couple of times and learnt some fascinating stuff about that area of London and seeing as it's always been a major port, it's a large factor behind the shaping of the rest of London.

  • Cool, I only made the list of facts last year and then left them behind anyway. I'll dig it out but it sound like you've got a lot of stuff from your other half. Defiantly remember the Dokyards on the South of the river, lots of important history too, it's not all just in the bollock of London.

  • defo, I'd also try and throw in some of the prehistoric stuff too. was on an excavation last year out in plumstead, found a bronze age trackway, one of the oldest ever found in greater london.

there's the arsenal etc etc etc too. no way near a route yet, just gauging interest.

  • Agreed. B'stard LDC filled all the South London ones back in the 80's. Could have been amazing down there now if they survived.

Royal docks after midnight are wonderfully spooky.

  • Hello folks,
I enjoyed the docklands ride last year - it was my first ride with you lot - give thanks for making me welcome...
Any idea of date, or month at least and time of day/night?
    Thanks,
    Tim

  • Looks good to me!
    Interested for sure.

  • I'd be up for this for sure. I wouldn't be able to do it till mid August or later so if that's when it ends up being, I'm in!

  • well up for this aaron, I am a wealth of useless but interesting facts about London if you want to tape me up for some info.

  • tape me up for some info.

    Cheers Claire.
