Burning gas?

  • Random but my curiosity is killing me.

Just watched The Bank Job...pretty poor even by Jason's standards.
Was realyl curious about this gas they used in a torture scene. It seemed to almost deteriorate everything it was blown on, in the film one of the crims blows it against wood panneling and it sort of just disintegrates. Then he takes it to one of the captive's legs but we don't see what happens there. Thing is the gas isn't lit or anything. Anyone know what it could be?

  • Vapourised concentrated acid?

  • yeah the most homologous real world thing would be HCl fumes or NaOH fumes,
quite possibly the latter, due to the effect on wood.
however, the disintegration would not be super rapid.

  • Probably fluorine. That fucker burns water. Almost impossible to get hold of in quantity though, I would have thought.

  • oooh fluorine.
    thats an excellent shout!
    or HF gas!

    brilliant.

  • Isn't it a sand blaster he uses? So sand blown at high pressure will definitely sting.

Failing that, white phosphorous or Methlyl Lithium could work... set fire to a few fume hoods using that...

  • Cool guys, yeah when the guy blowed it on the door it instantly just made a mark almost as if it was airbrushing except for the fact that obviously it was taking material off..I'll look these up ^_^

  • [makes mental note to avoid philjay]

  • Films don't have to obey the laws of physics.

  • Lies!

  • Films don't have to obey the laws of physics.

    word.

  • pretty sure it was just a sandblaster.

  • Yep, it was a sandblaster. You see the place covered in grit once matey's legs have been done IIRC.

  • Oh rite...
Cheers, no I can get on with business as usual...........>> <<
