  • i come off my bike last night going round clapton pond round about...

i dont know what the problem is... i think the fixy slipped (maybe lock nut not tightened)
i dnt know much about bikes (and stupidly bought a uni pack)

i bought it bk in march NEW
and was having alot of problems with the bottom bracket, and back wheel.
after the 2ND bottom bracket, and a new back wheel it was riding fine.

    until i come off...

and was wondering if any one could give me some info on what it could be, and any advice to get my money back seeing as it seems like a death trap and i have had enough with it,

    result of it...

    bike=
    one buckled front wheel
    bent handle bars
    out of line steering
    no front brake
and 1 and a half peddls
    ripd seat and bar tape

    (and the fixy keeps slipping)

    me=
    few cuts n bruises
    fractured rib
    and strained neck

id be gratefull to all the advice

  • by fixy do you mean sprocket?

Sorry to hear you came off, hope you heal up soon.

Given what you started with and the damage done my advice would be to start again build yourself up something with some decent components, sorry but there isn't gong to be anything worth salvaging.

Take the positives that you can from the experience, and make sure you get whatever you buy next checked out by someone who knows about bikes.

  • yeah the sproket... when you put alot of tension on it seems to slip...

  • Shit mate, that doesn't sound fun.
In terms of your sprocket and lock-ring, they need to be as tight as physically possible. The sprocket need to be tighten with a chain whip (tightened by turning to the right), and then the lock ring needs to be tighten with a lock ring tool (tighten by turning to the left). It would probably be advisable to have your local (decent) bike shop do this for you - Brixton Cycles is a good look if you live anywhere near there.
If the front wheel is a unipack wheel, the best advice would be to through the fucker away, and buy something new.
Front brake and pedals wont cost a lot if you have to buy them new, something like a dia-compe 101 is about £15 i think, and pedals you can pick up for cheap.
Are you riding with any foot retention? I.E. clips and straps, or spd's. If not, you really should be. You only have full control over a fixed gear if your feet are secured properly to the pedals. I suggest, until you get used to having your feet secured, having a back brake as well. If it's single speed, def get a back brake!!
Hope this helps, heal up fast dude!

  • do you have a lockring on there? it has a reverse screw thread (i.e. you tighten it anti-clockwise).

should look something like this (the lockring is the black bit):

  • yh theres a lock ring but i think its loose or the thread maybe worn

  • if all else fails....

if you dont intend to get it off again, my beater wheel has its cog loctited on as i damaged the thread and did not to risk slipping and stripping works a jem 1000 miles ish later with plenty o' skids and has not budged!

  • when you try to tighten it (the lockring, screwing anti-clockwise), does it get tight, or just keep turning and turning?

  • i havent looked at it, i dnt have much knowledge with bikes (as u can tell ibought a unipak)
bu was just wondering what to say to the owner in order of refund, as hospital said its not road worthy (maybe take him to court???)
but i cba jus want the bike gone

  • you changed the back wheel so it was not the orignal? if that is the case (and you say this was the bit which failed) then i hate to say you dont have a leg to stand on as you changed it from how you bought it so not technically the sellers fault

  • doubt you'll get a refund if you bought it in march. if i were you, i'd chalk it up to experience and start over, building a bike from parts on here. you might get someone interested in taking the frame and forks off your hands for a polo bike, maybe?

  • no the shop ordered in another unipak wheel and fitted it all

  • how long has the cog been slipping?

  • it slipped when i gt the new wheel he said it would its just tightning then yesterday it slipped n i come off, and it slipped as soon as i got back on it.

  • well i would go back to the shop then as a cog should be tight when you first ride it, saying it will tighten is bollocks it would just loosen further. if it is from a shop then they sold it in an unroadworthy condition and a lack of mechanical knowledge on your part is not an excuse for the shop

  • get well soon. sorry to hear about the accident

    apart from that,

  • i bought it bk in march NEW

you see, there's your problem. you don't wanna buy a bike from Burger King, man

  • i havent looked at it, i dnt have much knowledge with bikes (as u can tell ibought a unipak)

    Did they take xrays?

  • This sounds quite nasty. Whilst the Unipack doesn't have the best parts, it sounds like poor mechanics on the shop's behalf for not tightening the lock ring.

  • I'd take it back and demand a refund, outlining exactly what happened, and go and buy a different bike.
You should get one, if not, mention your hospital visit, and explain that it is their fault that you ended up there.

  • Saying the sprocket will tighten by itself is utter horseshit. Im in N1 with chainwhip/lockring tool if you decide its salvagable. Can also give you a 1 1/8 stem and a set of risers to replace the bent ones if you want. Cost me a tenner, yours for a jar of peanut butter and a packet of hobnobs.

  • Actually, fucking 2 packets of hobnobs.

  • oh, and +1 eyebrows. Shit effort that bike shop. Name and shame please.

  • take it back to where you bought it from and explain to them you are not happy with the bike then kill them in the head with it.
these also might be of some use to you when communicating your grievances:
    e. a. o. t.

  • hospital have x rays etc...
i will name and shame at some point tomorrow after iv spoken to them... as i dont want to risk it geting to them before i go there.

hospital said i could take them to court
claim compensation plus keep the bike and the shop would have to pay court fees.
so im just gonna go n ask for a refund explain everythin n if es not intrested i will name and shame everywhere and give him his court papers...

    p.s whats e.a.o???
and how do i quote a msg? i cant tick the box.
