ask at silverprint as they sell the chemicals and equipment

Best to go to your local college and ask if they have a dark room that you could use I would think.
Cheap= chemicals and trays
Expensive= kit to focus image from film onto paper
Effects= most awesome -

i guess i should say that it's a gift for someone. i'd need all the kit. is the enlarger the pricey bit?

cough hello, over here...
go to a local art school for evening lessons and they'll have everything you need. Might need to put £30 down for your own chemicals and paper but, other than that, you're good. What you shooting on?

As far as I am aware the enlarger is the pricey bit- although having a light proof room is somewhat tricky also.
I think enlargers are a little like camera equipment- you think "this'll be affordable", then look at it and think "8!@£$&"

one route may be worth considering is develop the film then scan it to a PCfrom the negatives
Developing the film is fairly straight forward (especially B&W) and needs little equipment and not loads of darkroom time, you may be able to do that with a dark bag, digital scanner's are not to expensive

everything you need (including enlargers) can be had VERY cheaply now.
You could easily pick up a whole darkrooms worth of equipment for next to nothing - loads of places are chucking stuff out / selling it for peanuts - even plenty of bargains on ebay
recon you could easily pick up a whole (decent) setup for £50-100

this looks like a reasonable set: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Complete-set-of-darkroom-equipment-including-enlarger_W0QQitemZ290322074464QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_WSJL_Wholesale_GL?hash=item43988b4b60&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A10|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50
guy claims he will do it for £60 BIN and may post
think you can probably do better tho.... :)
if i had a film camera and i wanted to have a go at developing some photos by hand, what kit would i need to start? how much would it cost? where would i go to buy the stuff? assume complete ignorance here... i just really need to get a clue. i'm not interested in forking out for the best kit available at this stage, just wanting to experiment. many thanks.
