  • Forgot to start the poll:
    1: yes
    2: no
3: get a fucking front brake

This is what happened to my 2 weeks old (for me at least) Motobecane frame (888 vitus tubing) after the chain slipped and I tried to brake with my foot on the front wheel. The foot followed the tyre and got stuck near the frame, locking the wheel up and sending me flying..

Do you think this is way too dangerous to ride on the street?
Both tubes are bent, as you see, but the lower one is the worst..

  • Should be alright I reckon, though you'll probably get toe overlap. Did that to a frame years ago when I was a kid and it was OK.

Oh and get a fucking front brake.

  • should have put your foot in the back wheel
same thing happened to me a while back, i used to ride brakeless bmx and now the back wheel is a easier option. should be OK as long as your don't rag it over pot holes a speed bums all day
    +1 toe overlap

  • I know, front brake is the first thing I'll get! Going to the shop today actually to sort it out..

Yeah, the toe overlap is pretty massive.. maybe it's too dangerous just because of the overlap, 'cause I can't really turn too fast..

  • why not affix a front brake to the bike through that nice hole on the forks to facilitate stopping the next time?

  • i have a brake and i am going to fit it before i ride my track bike again, seeing that i realise its just not worth it.
as manc ronnie says its happened to me also when i was little on a geared bicycle which i still rode around on for some time but it was the type of bicycle made out of what seemed like gas pipes.

    good luck

  • This incident must have looked fucking hilarious

Was at the shop on Tuesday to mount a brake, but it had to be there until today (thursday).. Since I had to meet some people for rides tuesday and wednesday, I decided to wait with the shop until today..and this happened tuesday night..I'm a moron, yes!

  • The frame will fail at an indeterminate point in the future. It's hard to say when, could be tomorrow, could be in a year. But it will fail.

  • This incident must have looked fucking hilarious

Well, my other foot was in the toeclip still, so the bike followed me in a more or less perfect circle (or so it seemed)..no people to see it though, luckily..

  • I wouldn't ride it, and;

this sounds like a good way to lose toes...

  • this sounds like a good way to lose toes...

I had on some leather sneakers, and my toes were alright..

  • I really wouldn't ride it.

  • I had a head on collision once, but I was fine, picked my self up and got back on my bike. I gave my cranks, and wheels a quick look over, but since they were fine, I assumed my frame must be as well. After ten minutes of riding I needed to brake sharply, as I put on the front brake, the damage to my frame, which must have been similar to yours, caused the down tube to bend even more, my front wheel hit the down tube, and stopped dead, and I was thrown over the top of the handlebars.
So in conclusion, don't ride the frame.

  • not if you have your foot a slight angle!
your toe does not actually meet the wheel just the side of you foot

That's what I'm basically afraid of.. I don't have brakes yet, since I just learned to skid properly, but I don't think I'll mount them on this frame, I'll try to get another one instead..doubt I'll get such a nice one though..

Another question, does the fork look bent near the lower cup of the headset? If it isn't then I'll use it on another frame, though if it is then I guess it has to go as well..

  • Yeah that bike should be fine, for polo.

Sorry to be harsh but there is a surfeit of people on here too concerned with style with no-skills, be it bike, balance or basic maintenance.

Did you read the London Lite by chance?

I was working on my skills when this happened, was practicing skids ;)

No, never read it.. Know it's a free newspaper, but was it anything in particular there?

Same happened to me, but the frame snapped without on a perfectly straight bit of road, and about a month after a crash.
Thats the only picture I can find...

  • Bin the frame
Fit a brake to your legs

    That looks scary as fuck!
I ride at a velodrome here in Oslo every week, and it would SUCK it this happened in the middle of a turn..

    Sandbar! Woooo

  • Only retards use the front wheel to stop brakeless, I mean seriously? I take it you've never ridden without brakes before eh.....
The frame is fucked and fit a fucking brake, I realize the irony of this statement considering I have broken countless parts and ride brakeless....but then again, I rode brakeless bmx for years, which is even more silly.

  • Safe to ride?
I think it will not suddenly break.
But the steering will be a bit strange and your toes may interfere with the front tire.
Especially when you attach and use a front brake now, the deformation becomes even more.
When the frame fails, there will be a crack first. The crack will become longer and longer until it reaches approx the 1/2 circumference of the downtube. Then it will snap. How long it will last? No one can tell. But I think you can ride it for a while, as long as you check the tubes before and after every ride.
