• for sale- mercian 531 road frame and forks, seat tube 62cm (c to c) top tube 58cm (c to c).

paint is in bad condition, lots of chips and a few large areas of nakedness- looks like somone rode with a d lock hanging off the bars as the head tube paint and decal has really been rubbed away. structure is sound and the ride quality nice. one very small 'ding' on the right fork blade and one of the dropout screws is bent though functional.

    £90

free to an abusive home- ridgeback cyclone frame, size x large (23 inch c to t)

polo it , cut it, break it, burn it- just get it off my balcony....

  • hey man i am quite intrested in frame were would it have to be piced up from ????

  • based in SE16 can drop off at Canada Water tube.

would consider travelling to drop off mercian but not ridgeback

  • Hi,

Just curiosity (I have a Mercian bike too) could you please tell me the 2 last or 2 first numbers of the serial number (I don't remember which one they are)that give you the year of buit of Mercian frames. I would like to compare with my one (from 79) because it does not have the same dropouts, and I was wondering if this is due to the age or the range of the frame...

    Many thanks

  • hey it loks like the bottom barcket bit has taken some damage is there any thing wronge with the frame

  • vello, mercian, last two numbers are the year.the serial number should be 5 digits long.

  • ollie ollie ollie oi oi oi

    that ridgeback
some young 'un was looking for a frame to get him started in the " fixed scene " maybe see if he wants it

he didn't post size or anything like that but would be nice to offer him it first ! check out thread stating.......... wanted : everything for a fixed bike "

Thanks for reminding me! I don't have the bike in front of me... My one is from 1979, and somehow I always thought strange that such a lately made touring frame did not have a brazed on bracket for the rear derailleur, this is why I've ask that question to the OP, to compare...

  • in them thar long gone days, a rule of thumb would have been a real racer had a gear hanger (its all one piece, not brazed on), a pretend racer didn't, and it generally had a a lesser tubing spec too, and often the ubiquitous brazed on lamp boss, there were exceptions of course.

Now where's me oil skin cape..............oh and me bicycle clips!

Thanks, that's the beginning of an clue for me... and sorry for the improper use of vocabulary (brazed on thingy instead of gear hanger) However, my Mercian does not pretend to be a racer, it's a touring bike I believe, and is made of 531 tubbing. Would a touring bike from 79 logically have no integrated gear hanger but a bolted one due to the fact it is a touring bike, or is that because it's a less well spec bike? Saying that, they are plenty of "pretend racers" with integrated gear hanger, you know, the dodgy ones that are bent and made of a basic metal plate, as opposed the the nice campagnolo ones...

it is an '83. dropouts and fork ends are campagnolo.

  • Salmon,

Are you sure the Mercian is 62cm c-c? That would make it a whopping 63 cm (ish) c-t. It doesn't look that big from the photos...

    Many thanks,

    Dick
