  • On June the 1st I spend a gorgeous day on Rottnest island just off the coast of Perth with my daughter. Some of you know the island.
Being that this island has a ban on cars it is just fab that you get to ride around all day without fear of being run over.
Are there any such islands near the UK? As I return in a couple of weeks it would be nice to ride those islands too.
    Stu.

  • You mean in Austraila? no wonder they banned car, the environment must be quite fraglie there!

  • Sark

Yeh Ed, Perth Australia. The island of Rottnest is quite fragile just limestone and sand dunes.
With paved roads around the whole island for all the bikes of course

  • glad you had a lovely day out there Stu, it looks beautiful and serene..pixs? fb?

  • @ fruitbat. I googled Sark and it says it has an area of 5.45 km² thats pretty tiny.

  • B. I rushed out the door and completely forgot my camera :(

that make sense, thought I'd have imaging having a small airport there isn't going to help keeping the island stable, need to do more research on that.

aahhgg! oh well, great memories :)

  • The most famous car-less island is perhaps Mackinac Island in the US:

A number of small Greek islands are carless.

  • This one said..something like!!

@ Ed. The airport is for the Royal Flying Doctors Service and those people who can't do the 25 minute boat trip.
I was also told yesterday that light aircraft pilots who need to keep flying hours up need to fly across a body of water and do a touch and go landing.

    B. I was gutted but great memories, Yes

It's the only island that I know is car free, sorry.

  • Oliver, that Mackinac looks great right there.
Would like to know more about the Greek Islands though? Any names?

  • Hey Fruitbat, don't be sorry, I appreciate your input :)

  • am I going mad or did posts appear then disappear?? i need to sleep, clearly.... :/

  • it's those live reply thing, and sometime when you refresh the browser it doesn't show the latest few post, until you refresh it again.

it's a bit dodgy as an escort sometime.

  • It's me going mad. my browser is showing double posts, so I deleted the second ones only to see my original one now gone WTF

  • thats happened to me a few times too, looks like a double post but its actually not... phewww.. its not me :)

  • mixing the live reply and refreshing the browser as well in a short space of time (or probably after a live post show up) does that to you.

  • how do you post "live reply" i just post in the normal message slot... sorry for derailing Stu...

  • no problemo, I thought I was loosing it.
    my own derail.
Ed I love your new Bob btw.

    Now back to islands?
Any info on car free greek islands?

live reply is when you can see other people post popping up without the need to refresh the browser (varies on browser I've noticed) not your own.

    thank mates, now back to islands, I did a quick search in Google for 'car-free island' and got this result;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_carfree_places

    here's the one for the UK and it's island;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_carfree_places#UK_and_Channel_Islands

  • @ Ed.
I also just did the wiki search! Good result.
I've been to Venice (not vienna) and although it is (almost) car free I don't recall seeing any bikes either.
