Jammed as in actually touching the big ring or just that they won't move?
Gripped cable causing it to break? Total warranty job. -
• #3
there's a fault with 105 front shifters (apart from they are shit and make your bike look like a raindeer) if you can't get the cable to slacken off on the adjuster and get life back into the shifter, there's a part inside which breaks when you try to force the shifter once it has jammed.
Mr smith has experience of this but he's out riding with his Dura-Ace shifters.
warranty job.

nah its not touching, it can still be ridden fine in the big ring, it just wont shift down or move at all.
gripped cable? no understand.
i think the shifter may well be busted, does warrenty cover this? sorry to labour the point but my brother is really concerned about paying more for a bike he only just got.

Actually, if it's a case of "the 105 overshifting problem" then warranty might be ? since there's a warning about it on the packaging.
Since you wouldn't have the packaging, and I'm sure the shop woudln't have told you.. it should be an issue for the shop to fix. -

im a little confused as to the cause. the only ones i can see are: shifting under too much load, up shifting when already up shifted, or not set up correctly. my bros a experienced MTBer so its not like he doesnt know what hes doing.
the bike is from evans, wha ya reckon?

Take it back, say "It no work, please to fix", if the bikes only days old I would think they'd sort it under warrentee.
-
• #8
Yeap, take it back to the shop.
They can investigate it and fingers crossed its just cable tension cuz that quicker than warranty!
Tiagra had a warranty issue - funny, we sent one back and got another faulty one in return!!! Pure coincidence! Wasn't aware of 105.
Bare in mind, it can take up to 2 weeks for Madison/Shimano to deem it as warranty, the shop will need to send the lever back and it just takes time.
I'm sure the shop will want to help in the best way possible.
Good luck!

Overshifting = forcing the shifter passed the top gear. If he's not used to riding with gears and was doing something dumb like riding big ring to big sprocket he and getting the chain rubbing on the cage, he may have tried to shift it further and hence broken it
EDIT: Oh, he's ridden gears before.. in which case.. unless he is just dumb :) it's a warranty

Good luck! It's just left the shop, possibly unfit for purpose.. they can supply a new one on sight and then deal with Shimano/importer behind the scenes. If they didn't I'd ask for a full refund and go elsewhere.

My spangly new Spesh Allez Elite also suffered the death of the left hand 105 STI unit on my very first ride out on it about 6 weeks ago. Shifted to small ring just to test it , horrible noise and no uppy shifty back to big ring possible.
When I called the C2W supplier I got it from they just said "Oh, another one. We'll send you out a new unit". This turned into a month long wait because apparently so many failed in such a short period on loads of new Specialized bikes (dodgy batch I was told?) that Madison ran out.
Finally got new shifetr unit took it to LBS, and sent invoice to supplier.

hmm, so i can i get it done at a local LBS and get evens to pay for it, even if it isnt an evans store? this sounds too good to be true to be honest. it wasnt bought through C2W.
if i remove the cable from the anchor bolt to get it back to the small ring (more ridable in the meantime) is this going to void my warrenty?

Retail law is long and complicated.
In short, I'm sure the shop will want to help and get you back on the road the quickest way possible, any good bike shop will look after you the best way they can. The shop may have their own policy on this already. I have always received impecable service from my LBS, it pays to be loyal.
Legally, the manufacturer states the conditions of the warranty (not us, not the shop, not your aunty) and they state if an item they produced is a failure they will repair or replace. They have the last say.
If you go in like a bull in a china shop......well, do I need to say anymore?

Yes , I should clarify that it was the C2W supplier who authorised me to take to my LBS for the repair. They do big corporate schemes and supplied the bike direct themselves from their own retail operation, so take it back to where you bought it.

Take it to the place you bought it.
+1

throw it in the fucking river.
it's screwed. -

Where is this, Fucking River?
Sounds fun! :) -

it's just before the golden shower.
not so fun :( -

one way to certain that the bit inside is broken is the two levers will not sit in the proper place and will feel slack.
try releasing the tension in any adjuster and at the mech. checking the barrel on the end of the cable is seated properly in the shifter. hold the cable in your fingers under a bit of tension and shift, you should feel the cable move a certain amount at each shift, if it doesn't shift and the lever has no tension in it the sear is broken inside and it's a warranty job.
if it does pull cable set the shifter up again. -
• #22
i tired adjusting the barrel and feeling for movement when shifting.
when i move the big lever i can feel some movement in the cable. from this it seems to have reset the small lever back to normal position, but pressing it has no effect. when i press the small level i can feel that it is about to click, but i dont want to as im clearly using too much force to do so.
it seems like there might be life left in it yet.
what do we reckon? i dont want to do to much, but if i can easily fix it i will.
-
• #23
well you could take it apart but they have very complicated internals and i guess it will invalidate your warranty.

Which part of "take it back to where you bought it" wasn't clear.
Do it.
Do it now or we kill your child.
DO IT!
sorry this is geared, but this board has alot of people with good experience with all types of riding being fixed or geared.
my brother bought a new 105/ultega fuji about three days ago. while out on a ride the front mech jammed on the big ring and the shifters became slack. he doesnt really know what hapened. it wont change down to the small ring.
the cable is still taught, but the shifters feel slack and dont have any movement on the cable. its 105 shifters on a 105 mech.
any ideas what this is/how to fix it?
the bike is only a few days old, will the warrenty cover this?
