Headset Spacers - How many?

Posted on
  • Ay up.

Just in the process of fitting some new chrome forks, with a steerer that is about 4cm too long at present, through a Record headset.
I will be sticking a Cinelli 1A quill on the top. :)

Although I could cut the steerer down, the headtube is small at only 108mm. I like these forks, and I don't really want to cut the steerer, as in the future I may change to a frame with a larger headtube (as this will mean the steerer could be too small).

So - what depth of spacers do you reckon I could feasibly get away with without it a) comprimising the ride and b) making it look like a fucking joke!
And - do Campag make spacers? I haven't seen any... Any suggestions on what spacers to go for?

  • 531mm of spacers is awesome.

  • You can put spacers above the stem if you want.

  • You can wear them on your fingers like Hula Hoops.

  • hee hee, i saw 'last post by BringMeMyFix' and knew there'd be something funny :)

  • You can use them as cockrings.

  • Bit of a pointless thread my man. Put 4 x 1cm spacers on there. It won't look amazing, but means that the possibility of re-using the forks is still there. having 4cm worth of spacers won't compromise anything.

  • Carbon fibre splinters in the nutsack are bad.

  • You can use them as cockrings.

Not sure about that one, Tommy...

  • Question still stands mind...

  • Mate, put however many spacers are needed on. Buy any bloody spacers that your lbs has. Spacers quality is not really an issue.......campagnolo spacers would be absolutely ridiculous imo!

  • Not sure about that one, Tommy...

    You can, I'll show you.

  • Spacers quality is not really an issue.......

You would think so but it can be. Some of them out there are so far of flat on the facing that you can introduce bad loading. Most are fine but have a quick check if you are using a few of them.

  • You can, I'll show you.

Malet Place tomorrow at 1pm - under the arch, in the shadows...

  • Well, I feel like I have garnered a lot of useful information here.

  • Well, I feel like I have garnered a lot of useful information here.

The information you need has been done to death on bikeforums.net, cyclingforums.com, bikeradar.com, personal blogs, this forum, your mum's coffee morning group, the treasury, assorted left-wing think tanks, etc.

Thankfully Tommy's planned spacer cock-ring demo means that something of value has been born out of this otherwise superfluous cyber verbage.

    No more than 3 (under).

  • My mum's coffee morning group isn't doing it for another three weeks actually.
Went on some of said sites, and didn't find anything conclusive - thought I'd try and get some opinions on here. All were highly useful.

  • If you post the dimensions of the spacer required i.e. ID, OD & length I may be able to get a single spacer made up for you.

  • You can use them as cockrings.

..now that 1point5 has been introduced as a standard

  • I also don't like to cut forks too tight, so later on I can reuse them in another frame. Are your frame (108mm head tube) the correct size for you? Usually Time Trial frames have small head tubes. Suppose that you change frame, what kind of frame / size will you choose? Measure frame head tube (new / desired frame) plus Record headset height plus 5mm and you get the steerer lenght for you present frame and put the necessary spacer to fit to it.

    I hope this help.

  • Forget Campy spacers. Basic polished/anodized aluminum spacers will match perfectly Record color.
