do this exist??
Yes, plenty.
Allthough, most have been produced for MTB's in the "before threadless" era.
That's what most stems make ugly on a road bike. What length are you looking for ?
If you're looking for a short one, many 1-1/8"stems are used on trekking/city bikes.
Adjustable or fixed.
Thus, also not "bling bling".
2 weeks ago I bought a new one for EUR 10.- for my little son's MTB.
Shortest extention possible, approx. 2.5 cm. -

This is the problem - all the ones on ebay look like a cat threw up on 'em, so I thought I'd ask my fine fellows at the LFGSS.
I am looking for something slightly nicer than that if poss (I already have an adjustable one which is raping my bike as we speak) but good to see they're out there at least.

i'd like to put my 1" quill stem in 1/8th/threadless forks and steer tube. anyone know if the adaptors are any good? ever used one?

No problem at all, I've done this several times.
No need to but an adaptor, you may already have several.
Just use a piece of steerer tube from an old 1" fork (or a brand new one: the upper few inches you don't need). That fits exactly 'cause it's 1" OD and 22.2 ID.Or use any other piece of tube with these dimensions.
E.g. top tube of a vintage steel frame...Dont forget to cut it with a hacksaw in the length, so it will expand a bit when you tighten the 1" quill stem.
If you want to do it properly, make a small seal on the top (around the stem) to avoid that water leaks in.
Another possibility: steerer tube extension. Or the part that converts your short threaded steerer tube to a longer threadless version.
It usually comes with shims 1" to 1-1/8". -

so what would i do for a headset? use the threadless one i would normally be using with that set up without the 1" quill stem? forgive my naivety but i'm new to 1/8th and threadless.
i understand so far to cut some steer tube from a 1" fork steer tube, but where does this go? am i tightening the quill stem onto that, and then inserting this whole thing into the headtube? then how does everything stay together? (i don't know how threadless 'technology' works)
cheers

Use a threaded 1-1/8" headset, because that belongs to your frame and fork.
Slide the 1" shim / sleeve / piece of steerer tube into the 1-1/8" steerer tube and then the quill stem into the shim. Then tighten the stem.
Or, slide the shim over the stem, both into the steerer tube and then tighten the stem. So, you just put the 1" stem into the 1-1/8" fork/steerer tube and use an additional 1" to 22.2mm shim.
Good luck.

Seconded with the thanks - it's much easier to get a smaller quill stem. Anyone flogging one? :D
Silver if poss.
Cash waiting. Cheers!
