you can win, but study times and gears to use
you need max acceleration for the 100m
-
• #3
Can you trackstand?
That's gonna make a big difference to your time (assuming you're not being held by a starter) and isn't cheating. :) -
• #4
Interesting.. Wouldn't mind watching that

i think we're running no starting blocks for the sprinters, standing start for us (it's 2 on 2).
we need to do a few more practise runs (at the moment they'd have us beat), but if anyones in cambridge and curious, then we'll be taking on the varsity guys in the next week or so. -

no problemo.

is the consensus that this is possible, though? i'd rather not make a tit of myself...

You can't back down now.. chicken..

this is true. unfortunately, one of the guys runs 10.84 on a good day.

can someone video this. sounds awesome.
a bit like top gear's veyron vs eurofighter :Pbit of a runner myself.. but i think the machine will pip by a fraction.
is there gonna some sort of bet / wager?? could be an excellent showdown! -

let ME do it for you.

The only hard bit for the bike is the first few cranks, after that youll be flying.
Like the others have said, you really need to practice with the gears to make sure you have the exact right one. Are you using a geared bike? If so, make sure you can shift fast and reliably track stand on a freewheel bike. If your riding fixed and choose too low a gear, itll come down to leg/spinning speed. In which case I think the runner will easily win.
At the end of the day, just go practice with a crazy unrealistic speed of usain bolts 9.69seconds. If you can beat/match that you know whos winning.

If the runner's going to be averaging 20mph (11s), then I'd be looking at a gear in the low to mid 60s. Easy enough to get on top of it within 4 or 5 seconds, and you could sustain close to 30mph for the last 40m or so. Or thereabouts.
Work on your standing starts. That's the most important bit, and it may take a few sessions for your lower back to acclimatise.

Practise you can trackstanding switch so that you're on your good leg after half a rotation.
60-ish inches sounds about right too.

I think the runner will win....there I've said it....make it 200m and you'd win

venue (to be confirmed) will be wilberforce road, due to the handy lines marking out 100m/200m etc.
out of the two bikes doing it, ones a £1000 beast with gear paddles where you want them, and mines a well-loved peugeot with gear levers on the frame which i dropped gear on for the first time in months yesterday. bizzarely, we were doing very close times. So, trackstanding switch is the key. i'm on it.
-
• #22
You not doing it fixed? Surely that would make sense.
-
• #23
Not sure trackstanding is the key with a low gear start. If you get caught backfooted then the race will be lost before it starts. I reckon you'd be better with a switch standing start. Hyperventilate on the countdown, get your hands on the drops and then tuck after about 30m and do not change gear. The runners will have you on the first 50m but as soon as they are upright, you'll have the advantage. This is likely to be a very close finish.
See this.

where's ma monies?

Sub 11 second sprinter, add 0.8 - 1 second for not running out of blocks and a bit more for running alone for the first 70m. That leaves you with 12ish seconds to ride 100m from a standing start.
As long as you're not slow you should win.
I've made a bet with the fastest sprinter from the athletics team that i can beat him in a 100m standing-start sprint.
Is this going to end in tears?
Has anyone done anything like this before?
