Not up for building one from scratch?
The Charge Plug Racer is nice ride. With the chrome frame it allows you to customise at a later date with any colour you want to make it stand out from the crowd.

Building one from scratch sounds scary to me as I dont have the knowledge to make it...
and the prices are relatively higher? (i think)
and yeah! i saw some pics of Charge Plug Racer on flickr, they look cool after being customised!
I also read some reviews on the Racer, the only bad thing is that it is slightly heavier than normal? -

Like velodrama said building your own from scratch is good as its completly to your taste, but it obviously takes a bit of time. Have a look around on here, for £500 you could get something pretty sweet. Enjoy!

The question is whether you want to go through the extra effort - it's not actually that hard but will take longer due to having to source parts. If you want to learn mechanical skills there are tons of people on this person who will be able to help you in person. Befriend someone from your are by going to the drink nights and ask people.
Quick summary for My First Fixed™
- Get a frame on ebay or the Classifieds on here
- Build wheels (Wheel building class)
- Put on crank and cog
- Put on pedals and brake and whatever's left
- Success

i bought an OTP a few months back... and its kinda like being 18 again, with ur first car.. always tinkering with shit.. and buying shit you dont REALLY need, but looks the business. Alloys, fluffy dice and the likes.
I wish i would have gone straight to building my own bike.. ... much more satisfying... and as everyone sez - u get what you want.
I'm about to start building an 80's raleigh this week... def more excited than when i bought the Fuji Track. (dont get me wrong, great bike - more so that plug IMHO)
also you'll know everything about ur bike. I was in Cycle surgery when i got a flat tyre the other week, and some hipster comes in with a bling bling pista... and essentially didnt know how to change a tyre as he had a flat too. he looked like such a nonce - total wannabe. dont be that guy. :Phope that helped.

Shall i go to a workshop? what is it like? The Open Tools doesn't exist anymore - I'm pretty certain of that. The next best thing is going to the pub nights where there gonna be lots of knowledgeable people. Talk to them and ask your questions. Where do you live?
If you want a cheapish build get a road bike with horizontal dropouts off ebay and put in a new rear wheel. Definitely also read Sheldon Brown. It looks dated but is the best website on fixed gear bikes.

Oh really..? I am currently staying in a college hall in brighton, but I have an apartment in London, which i live there during holi. My course ends in next month, then I'll move to london!
Um... I don't think I'll do that, I'd rather build it from scrachtes. For 500-600pounds what can i get? Will it be better than an OTP? Do you think i won't do anything wrong?:S -

looks like ur in the same situation as tuxrider..

Do you think I should cancel the OTP option? -
• #23
Nah i just gave him a shit reply :D
He has got more budget than me .... 800pounds... -
• #24
i reckon ya.
i'm still pretty new... but i;ve learnt so much from these guys in 2 or 3 months that i'm comfortable building own bike - theoretically... (til it goes wrong :D )just decide wat u wanna use it for/look u want.. track vs vintage. then head down to the 'bay.
once uve got that, these are the bible.

Easy!
Go for the Charge Plug Racer (for the frame if anything else), then change the tyres (dia or vittoria 23c) , handlebars (nitto drops for me) and pedals. And the chain if you are feeling a cheeky color scheme coming on. It's a hugely versatile bike and perfect for completely changing.
Great bike to start off with for sure, ignore any haters on this site though. Have also bought a set of Ice Toolz which certainly didn't do any harm. The more you tinker (and potentially make mistakes) the more you will learn.
Velosolo is my choice site to buy from, super friendly and informative in a world where people think they can be a dick to you because a month ago they could finally afford a Bob Jackson (can't wait to get mine though!)
Anyway, not matter what bike you get am sure it will be a great starting block.
Enjoy your rides.
I am looking for a new fixie for cycling to college and learning tricks. As I am new to the fixed gear world, my friend suggested me to look at those cheaper “off-the-peg” fixies. My budget is around £500 ish-. and I am about 175cm tall.
After doing some researches, I am now choosing between:
Bianchi Pista Steel – £520
Fuji Track 2009 £399.99
SE lager £399.99
Charge Plug £499.99
Charge Plug Racer £537.99
They are all from evans(price are similar in other shops) except the Bianchi Pista.
I don't really like surly steamroller, but I quite like the Charge plug racer's chrome frame, has anybody ridden it yet?
I heard BLB is cool but I haven’t been to there yet. I saw the website offering a range of “off the peg” bikes, do you guys know any better choice that I can choose from? or shall I ask a shop to build one for me?
Thanks.
