  • Am going to be spending a couple of days in Oslo before heading off touring. If anyone has particular recommendations or hook ups there, do let me know. Will have bicycle but will be geared rather than fixed

  • Head up to Molde and Ride on The Atlantic Rd, amazing just riding over water. I want to do it again on a bike.

  • unfortunately that's in wrong direction...cycling to Sweden and looking to spend a day or so in Oslo before heading over some hills/mountains towards Karlstad and beyond. Thanks for the suggestion

  • Norway is such a beautiful country, have fun.

Having lived just south of this for a few years I finally got around to visiting this a couple months ago. TBH it was a bit of an anti-climax. Must admitt, it would have been great on the bike though.

If you can (ie your not running 20mm tubs) check out some local trails. There are some amazing road riding to be done in Norway (although more so in the west). But the well maintained trails around Olso apparantly (havent tried myself) make for some nice cycle routes.

Important phrases for cycling in Norwegian traffic:

    Fungere ikke blinkelysene dine, eller?
Your indicators not working, or what?

Nei, det er du some bør ikke være på veien!
*No, its you that should'nt be on the road!*

    Have a nice trip.

  • Norway is ace(think there's a 'Norway/Scandinavia' thread in this section somewhere?)

I drove from Oslo into Sweden, Gothenburg, down to Helsinbgorg, Malmo then into Denmark(Copenhagen)
You'll love it on your bike, great scenery....
They are very careful drivers too, they all drive about 40kmph everywhere they go

  • Back from my holiday in Oslo to Köping. Amazing time. Oslo has much to recommend it and managed to avoid getting credit crunched by camping and cheap ethnic eats although the town obviously has the ability to swallow your credit card whole. There is a fixed wheel seen (see fixie.no) but i left it too late to make contact with them. Oslo feels pretty similar in character to Stockholm although I'm sure I'll have Swedes and Norwegians calling me out for that.

Ride through to Köping was lovely rolling hills through forests and fields with lakes regularly scattered along the route. Apart from time in Oslo and in Köping, it was wild camping the whole way with some stunning campsites, the one below being a favourite.

Breakfast and lunch was obtained from supermarkets but dinner was eat out and dominated by pizza and salad. The Swedes take an 'interesting' approach to Sweden, and I would firmly recommend finding out what the contents are before ordering (bolognese and pineapple for a pizza called Venezea doesn't sound right). Mind you, have fallen back in love with pickled herring...

Terrain was comfortable with a geared bike with a pretty full load and there's a good selection of cycling friendly routes across Sweden. Finished off with Mid Summers celebration which was definitely the icing on the cake. If your looking at cycling through the area let me know.

  • Nice one, Gus.

I'm well up for some more riding around Norway, but don't want to fly there. Why did the Newcastle > Stavanger/Kristiansand/Bergen ferry have to shut down? Lame!!!

  • cheap airfares have something to answer for imo...Hamburg ferry route has also closed down and presumably for much the same reason.

  • Once stayed in the YHA at the site of the winter olympics right underneath the ski jump. Great views. Recommended. Then toured over to Bergen and back. Journey over the Hardangervid remains an epic wasn;t ridin gfixed at the time.
