Although, seriously have never heard of it, I know there is 453, 653, 753 but I have never seen a 553 although it can't be completely inconceivable.

Funnily enough there is one of those outside my flat right now.
The sticker says "Reynolds - double butted down tube - 553 - CRMO"
That's quite specific. It has nice tight clearances and short horizontal dropouts. Shimano groupset.

All I know is that Reynolds cromo is 520 (as well as 500 and 501, unbutted thought), perhaps 533 a different kind of cromo?

I'm finding that 520 and 501 contain molybdenum, and 531 contains a higher ratio of manganese. As for 553, I'm seeing a lot of references to titanium on the net. Perhaps it's a steel alloy with a high titanium content? Sounds tasty!

i think it contains traces of adamanitium too... no more dings...

Could be Reynolds 653. No, it actually appears to have a 553 sticker.. cool.
Maybe a custom tubing type for Puegeot? I can only find another ref to it on a Pug.

520 is the the licensed stuff made for taiwanese mass produced frames.
There is a big picture of all the badges knockinging around somewhere, I think it labels what each type is intended for also.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2368/2072364171_9902bb4430_o_d.jpgSounds possible to me! I did a quick search and only saw a pug reference as well. Dyna-Tech Raleighs had custom tubing from Reynolds as well (2060, 2070, 2080), so it's something they've done.

I got in touch with someone at Reynolds who has worked there for donkey's. He says he knows nothing about this - Reynolds never made 553 tubing, to the best of his knowledge. He said I would be hard-pushed to find out from Peugeot now as they've been taken over by Biannci...

The sticker says 553.
There's also bike matching the one above "Peugeot Performance 5000" that also mentions 553 tubing from some guy in Queensland: http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uq.forsale/browse_thread/thread/6b58011b6bd79816/961f2626fc244a3e?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=Peugeot+Performance+5000+553+reynolds&pli=1
Mention of a cheapish Richard Virenque replica bike here: http://groups.google.co.uk/group/rec.bicycles.racing/browse_thread/thread/4ea59e096ca567f/68fb5eaa68b87f4b?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=Peugeot+553+reynolds#68fb5eaa68b87f4b

Perhaps someone in Reynolds was a big Spinal Tap fan and decided that it need to be higher for being really awesome.

http://www.velotrainer.net/f_showthread.php?tid=11154&start=2Oh dear. It's more like 'I just went to have a look at my old Peugeot, and (it turns out) that I own a Reynolds 553 (bike). It's old and heavy, but reliable.'
I can't believe Babelfish doesn't even recognise the "d'" and the "c'" bits correctly. That's shocking.

It's a free translater. You get what you pay for.
I got the gist of what the guy was saying and that's all most people need usually. -

I wouldn't pay for a free translater, you know.

I disagree--perhaps if you're talking about something pretty simple, but if something arises that is merely moderately complex or involves one slightly subtle distinction, this will be inadequate. At the same time, I do hope that we manage to retain as many incentives for people to actually learn foreign languages, and so a crap translating programme is, in a way, a good thing--the only worry is if people were to think it was accurate without realising that it's not.

You wait all day for a Reynolds 553 frame to come along, then you get two at once...

Google Translate turns it into
I just go on my old Peugeot and Reynolds is a 553 that I own, and that date is heavy (but reliable, however)I think the basic problem, and I may be wrong here, is that French has quite a lot of foreign words. In the wrong order.
I believe German is much the same.

Bang on!
The Chinese are one of the worst.

Anyone get any further with this? I've a performance 5000 frame (553) sitting downstairs if I want it. Seems fairly light.

They do. Foreign 'language' is just them making silly noises when english people are around. It's all for show. They laugh behind our backs afterwards.

What do you want to know? There's not much info out there. It's a nothing special steel.

all reynolds tubing beginning with a 5 or 6 is shit

I'm guessing 553 is plain gauge cromo except for the downtube which is double butted.
and RPM is wrong, as 531 is awesome. There are t shirts and stickers and everything, so it must be true.

Thinking about bidding on this to refurb as a geared audax bike. But I have never heard of 553 and can't find anything on the Interweb. Anyone heard of it or know about its ride characteristics?!
