So that's Edgar (pink) working together with a French guy (in black)--who's the French guy? Someone well-known?

Looks as if no-one told them. ;)
I just meant as in 'the two Europeans go off the front right from the back'--it may be by accident, but it didn't look completely accidental--after all, you always hear that the Japanese riders team up against the Europeans, so I wouldn't find it at all unusual if sometimes at least Europeans did the same. Anyone know?

yeah, they do in fact.
there's a diary kept by aussie Ben Kersten about riding in the JKA http://www.cyclingnews.com/riders/2007/diaries/benk/
The night before every race day you must nominate what gear you will ride and nominate what tactic: yes, my favourite words, Senko, Makuri or Oikomi. This is locked in with the newspapers and then and there is NOTHING that can be done to change it. Tactics and gear selection go out to all the bookies and then the people start to bet according to that information.
and a docu about Bos somewhere when he was out there

japanese-run keirin races are very different to the international version we see outside of japan - tactics are more a part of the race, riders nominate their position and team before the race. so it's very possible that edgar was working with the dutch guy (though i can't see the clip on this computer to be sure).

looks like Ross has found an international friend to help him out. from kersten's diary it sounds pretty bleak if you can't get someone onside.

Basic tactics are decided before the race. Different riders have to nominate what they are going to do. I think the link that RPM posting is where Kersten describes the different "styles" of tactic that riders have to declare and use. So, some guys go from the start, some guys have to block and only attack with 300 to go and the guys in front of them go at 200 or some bollocks.
Read Kersten's diary.. it's quite interesting (i just wish my memory worked)
