Paint restoration

  • I've recenty purchased a fairly vintage frame with a very nice paint job- maroon, with gold pin stripe and white detailing around the lugs, probelm is it's just a bit knackered as you would expect from a frame this old. So, I am considering trying to get the original paint job retsored but not sure the best place to get it done.

Has anyone had something like this done before, or can they recommend somewhere?

    Armourtex maybe.

    Cheers.

  • I have the same problem I've got a nice old moser, but with a few rust patches, paint chips etc. I took it to a car bodyshop, but they said it was too intricate and said repairing the existing paint would cost over £100. think I'm just gonna keep it original as I think I could fuck it up by trying to do it myself.

  • If you can match the colours with enamel, wire wool back the flaking paint/rust and then prime and enamel.

I guess Jackson/whitcomb or Argos could also do it but it wold cost a fair bit.

  • ColourTech does quality detailed restorations.

  • Thank you, all very helpful.

  • Hey will, glad you're sticking with the original colour scheme, that frame looks bad ass. Personally i'd run it with all its glorious patina/flaky bits til you can afford the best possible resto/paint work going. Nelson weren't the biggest of firms either so new decals may be a challenge.

Good luck with the frame, was a little worried when you said you were going to spray it black but glad you came back to the light.
    enjoy

  • I've been quoted 'from £200' for a full restoration, plus £40 for them to collect the frame. Bit out of my budget so I'm going to stick with it for the time being!

  • thing is of course, with a full restoration you know they're going to work some serious magic, not just on the paint. ie polishing rust off, checkin all the lug brazing, treating the inside of the frame to help preserve it; so if after you've ridden your bike for a couple of years and still love it then a couple of hundred notes may not seem so bad. still cheaper than many alternatives.
Pics when built, i have an idea how i thought it'd turn out but it'll be cool to see someone else's taste on that frame.

  • This thread is useless without pics.

    Was that quote from ColourTech?

  • terrible pic from my classified ad.

  • +1 on riding it just as it is.

  • Colourtech is pretty good actually, saw an excellent job by them.
