Shimano BB problem

Posted on
  • I am trying to remove a Shimano BB from an old frame I have acquired, the problem is that the "splines" on the RHS cup are basically shredded and the BB tool cannot get enough grip.

Any of you clever people have any helpful tips/ideas?

    Thanks

  • If you can get the other side undone then it will remove the tension on the offending cup and you should be able to tap the shredded one round with a hammer and punch.
If not get a small set of mole grips, insert the jaws into the axle hole and wind out the adjuster till it grips then undo.
If it is still stuck consider cutting a couple of opposing notches in the cup and jam a piece of steel strip or such in to use as an extractor.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks for the tips.

Are there mole grips with adjusters? or do you mean a small pipe wrench.

I think I may have to go down the destruction route, maybe trying to drill out the main body and then tapping round the remaining cup.

The LHS cup is out if that makes any difference.

  • Are both cups stuck?

  • The LHS (non drive side) is out

  • If there's enough material left on the splines, you could try bolting the extractor into the cup.
