MTB Chainring - dangerous in a fixed?

Posted on
  • So I have a MTB crank on my fixed, and I've got an MTB chainring to go on it. Apparently the arms in the chainring are faced to resist force only for pedalling forwards:

The shop I have my bike with has recommended changing the chainring to one made for fixed which is stronger.

But is it actually dangerous using this chainring which is brand new?

  • It is likely to be narrower than ideal if it 9spd. It should still run, would be worse with a 1/8th chain than a 3/32nd. Otherwise metals are isotropic (equally strong in all directions) so that won't be a problem. Although they tend to buckle in compression which wouldn't be too fun. There is a lot more material in the arms than about the bolt holes, I reckon it will probably be fine.

If you could return it for a symmetrical one that might be better for peace of mind, otherwise I would just use it and if it fails then get a decent replacement

  • The shops having you on!

  • It'll be fine.

Personally, I prefer the appearance of symetric chainrings and the SJS Cycles ones are very reasonably priced for the quality. Nice tall teeth too. As above, the main thing is to match the tooth width with chain width for a smooth running drive train. I use 8-speed chains on my SS MTB without any trouble at all, although still have 1/8 chains on the fixed ('cause I like them).

  • Yes. You will die when the chainring explodes. I've seen this happen on at least 3 previous occasions.

  • A mtb chainring gave me aids

  • MTB chainrings attacked my village, killed my brother and ran off with my FiancĂ©

  • A mtb chainring gave me aids

I thought that was from you fucking those monkeys?

  • the monkee caught it off the chainring

  • Those monkeys will do anything for nuts

  • Guys, this isn't funny, my brother was killed by a mtb chainring...

    He accidently the whole thing...

  • too easy.

lol, that chainring literally melted after only 3 days of use, meaning I ground to a halt in the middle of shaftesbury avenue during rush hour, in front of a bus.

My advice: don't use MTB chainrings on Fixed bikes and listen to pros in a shop.
