Good route for London to Newbury?

Posted on
  • I'm arranging a bike ride to Newbury from central-ish London but I've realised that I have no idea what route to actually take. Does anyone have any good suggestions for the route or parts of it?

  • Thames path out to Windsor with the appropriate shortcuts then backroads through Bracknell, Wokingham and Shinfield. Over Burghfield Common to the Kennet & Avon Canal at Aldermaston Wharf and stick on that all the way into Newbury.

Best when dry as the canal paths and Thames path can be a bit unpleasant if it's been raining a lot.

  • Why?

  • Would that not be a really slow route SK? Tow paths are nice and all but it you want to make 60ish miles it will take forever?

  • It wouldn't be the quickest way to get there but it would be nice, it's not always about how fast you go. Besides the tow paths are only a small portion of the route, the Thames path can be fairly quick if it isn't too busy and the road section from Windsor to Aldermaston Wharf needn't be slow at all.

I'd estimate the route that I suggested would be closer to 70 miles and take around eight hours including food and coffee stops, which just sounds like a good day out to me. Get rolling at 9am, finish at 5pm, pie and pint before getting the train back to London and roll into a pub for a few more drinks. What more do you want?
