this is going to be my next project, but looking to do something rediculous like a ti brompton.
I know someone on here has one, and is should theoretically be fine barring chain tensioning issues with very dropouts!

The Bromptron transformenger bicycle sounds OK but I'm not keen on the folding rear wheel arrangement

Been looking to do the same as I travel to London from Northampton about 4 days a week.
Like the look of the Dahon Solo as well, but the missus is not buying the n+1 bike rule.
Hoping to track down a cheap Dahon frame (26" wheels) and building up from there. See if I can sneak it past her bit by bit.

From memory, A to B ran an article on this some time ago--by a very wide margin the best place to find out:
Brilliant magazine.

I've seen a bloke on a fixed Airnimal before.

don't think you can fold a brompton fixed!
they have a chain tensioner and no ss dropouts so that the chain can 'bend' when you fold them. You couldn't do that without the tensioner

you can actually, there is an option to 'lock' the rear triangle onto the main frame, but keeping the chain tensioner to keep the chain from slacking when folding it.

ritchey breakaway?

it might depend on the gearing you want to have

difficult project, have to take bikes on trains all the time so I can see why you are trying it. As far as I can make out Bromptons have to be kept the same in transmission so no go on conversion. Dahons are a bit feeble (all folders are bit more high maintanence anyway) but, they may be better for conversion, the new shimano alfine chain tensioner is a good piece of kit that can replace some set ups, providing the drop outs on the frame type are o.k.Dahons/others with cassettes could also be changed to s/s using cheap On one (or other) conversion kit.
Have just done a Birdy C2W into s/s 72" gear, testing today- pics to follow! -

I wouldn't want a one speed or fixed brompton. I ride the 2 speed one and they are not stable at all when out of the saddle so you are best to use the gears and stay in the saddle. I think that there would be better brands to convert to fixed, or just use a brompton as it is.

I think this is what you want for a fixed folder http://www.foldingbikes.co.uk/xootr_swift.htm assuming you can get hold of just the frame. As used to win the Smithfield Nocturne folding race IIRC. You could also do the magic gear trick on a Dahon - mine (a Helios SL) is several years old now and holding up OK, but you might be better off trying to find one of the steel-framed models.

You want a Raleigh Twenty, you do :)

If I had money to burn I would love to own one of these bad boys: http://www.foldingbikes.co.uk/moulton_new_series_rohloff.htm

I would really love to know how they can justify such insanely high price tags though, but I still want one :p
-
• #17
£5350 for the cheapest one!! ha, theyre taking the p..s
-
• #18
The rear hubs are over a grand to start with. I agree they are expensive but the components are very expensive too.
-
• #19
Also, they're made (beautifully) in the UK and that spaceframe has about a million tiny, perfect brazes on it. Well worth having a close look at should you spot one, just for the quality of the workmanship.

Anyone here ever converted a Raleigh shopper or anything similar to fixed? I have to get on the train once a week and bumming around till 7pm gets me down.
Dahon do a SS folding bike with a coaster brake but I'm not about to buy one for a once a week journey
Agreed that there is a lot of work gone into them expensive folders, hell, I would stretch to a Rohloff if really wanted one but, I get the impression our friend the thread starter was looking for something with a bit less, er, pecuniary impact...

The Swift folder mentioned in this thread looks pretty cool. It's on my vague list-of-bikes-I-want to buy.
