Well, what's the smallest cog on her cassette?
You can change the cassette to a 11-21, change the chainring to a 54, 55, 56, etc or train her to use a higher cadence. -

where do i get a shimano compatible 56t chainring? Tried the higher cadence, but her heart rate falls significantly when she spins a bigger gear more slowly.

HR falls, but what of her power output?
Shimano make a DA TT-specific chainrings up to a 56.

and these up to 56T
Also the current BBAR champ runs a custom made 77T chainring! He also prefers lower cadences.

Fantastic - thanks Hippy...
Havent stumped up for a power meter yet! Think I may have to as she's showing aptitude, despite her absence of meaningful training. Very very frustrating to have your arse whipped (!) by your wife.

That's why I'm not getting married.. ;)

Not sure that marriage changes much. So - she is 42, has three young children to look after (including a 2 year old), works two days a week, didn't have a road bike until this time last year (post London marathon purchase), yet somehow she managed to come 4th out of 45 women in yesterday's Coventry CC event! On three hours a week training. Makes me want to puke a bit; though in truth i'm bursting

It's just not fair. :(

Consider trying a 52-36 combo in the Q-Rings, difficult to spin out with an 11-21 at the back.

I have a chainring question.
Want 48/32 chainrings, any suggestion? Can't see many.
-
• #11
Theres a bunch of touring style/edscoble cranks that might have that, think it was discussed in @umop3pisdn 's thread. Possibly middleburn something. Otherwise just compact cranks, an aftermarket 48t and live with the 34

I need 32. So I can run 32/28. Or I'll stick with 34/30.
Why companies don't make smaller chainrings I don't know. Who needs a 50/11 anyway. Let along 53/11. Let alone 58/11!

Can't go below a 34t on commonly available cranks. Need weird Praxis/FSA/Sugino super compact chainset.

32/28 and 34/30 are the same ratio, why do you 'need' this?
-
• #15
Thats the smallest I need.
I'd rather a tighter cassette ratio using 12-28 than 12-30. So a 32 front inner ring is better. -
• #16
Bugger then, need powermeter.
Okay. maybe 13-30 cassette then. Like before.

Those will need praxis specific cranks.

Oh thanks.

Looks like it

Mrs S is looking to increase her gear ratio on her time trial bike. She currently has a 53t big ring on an Ultegra chainset, and is claiming that she is running out of gears while racing 10's and 25's (her maximum power output comes at a cadence of 65-70).
Do I need a new chainset (I notice that FSA do a 56t tt ring), or is there something that I can do with what she has? Also, if we do increase to 56, will I need to increase the inner ring from 39 to 42 or so?
Wouldnt really matter that much except she is showing some aptitude....
