  • [Replace all reference to threading with lacing . . . It was a long day dont flame me] So I decided, with nothing but Sheldon's cryptic advice, to build myself a couple of wheels. Now after deciding on doing them two cross I started and the wheel was trued, tensioned and dished all nicely nicely with no majour problems.

Apart from one. Instead of doing them two cross I had done them single cross. On the other hand the wheels ran fine and they're actualy threaded correctly for my strange single cross method. I've done about 40-50 miles on them so far and they've started to come out of true (as they would on any new wheel) and I decided to take them to my local bike shop for a little MOT. The guy seemed suprised I'd ended up doing them single cross (I'd spoken to him about the wheels before) but had no real problem with me lacing them single cross apart from some shocked responses along the lines of 'Single Cross ... weird' and then said it was fine and he'd true them for me.

Now what I want to know is am I secretly signing my own death certificate by riding around on these things with spokes (that are actually supposed to be double cross but) that seem to be stable enough and fit well if not abit goofy. Ive decided to stay off the bike until ive sorted this which is just as well seeing as the weather is shit.

  • do you mean lacing not threading?

  • Crap . . . Its been a long day

  • Death is unlikely. Just ride the bike until you fall off or get over your fanniness

  • Haha. Not quite the technical advice I was looking for.

  • Not sure about single cross on the rear. Might find it goes out of true alot. The thing about the spokes being the right length for double, but being laced single, could mean you have too little thread to thread contact. Do the ends of the spokes stick out through the nipples? If not your probably fine on the front.

  • The bike shop would not let them go without a very strong word or would have refused to work on them at all had they believed them to be unsafe.
Normal bashing about is fine on radials so a 1x isn't going to suddenly fold.

  • [thread*jack]
Do I want to be using Loctite on the nipples for a radial threaded front wheel?
    [/threadjack]

Apparantly, allthough spoke prep would be better (IMHO).
    This stuffs nice to use.

  • I've built a few odd wheels, but I have a simple question for you first.
You say single cross. Does this mean that the only point where the spokes cross is right down close to the hub? or Do they cross mid-way along the spokes as well?

If they only cross at the hub, they will not be in contact with each other, correct?
If this is the case, I'd rebuild them so that they cross 2x and are in contact with each other mid way between rim and hub, for the simple reason that when you run tensioned spokes at an angle and they don't cross each other in contact it is an absolute bitch to keep them trued.

You don't have this problem with radial spokes because the spokes run directly from hub to rim and aren't at an angle.

  • Yeah i mean it sticks out a little im pritty sure but relacing is going to desperatly depress me. The guy hasnt actualy started work on the bike yet so im guessing hes gunna have a nice chat with me telling me im gunna have to relace it. But i dont know if i can get away with riding it. Maybe i should just HTFU.

  • Yeah im gunna have to do it again. I guess. Sigh. Or get someone to do it for me. Whos cheap?

  • E1 cycles. Arup. There are a few forum folk that offer services.
    . Anyone cheaper than BLB - £15

  • pm dogsballs

  • Fanks

  • can you post a pic of the wheel? as i think it is 2cross, as you might be missing the first cross point at the hub. front should be fine, as one cross

  • The crossing points depends on the hub flange size, large flanger the lower down they cross.

  • Sorry for unclear photos was in a rush
You got front left and right/ rear left and right/ spacing between spokes
I can assure you they're all laced the same even though the photo doesn't really show it.

  • 1 cross. ok for front but rear really sketchy.

  • 1 cross. ok for front but rear really sketchy.

Well I'm glad I found out before I tacoed it. Coincidently . . . are you in the market for a rear wheel build?

  • yeah, shoot me a PM.

  • @ eustace

if you built them as one cross then lacing them as two cross is just as easy

check sheldons site and copy what he does or check up arup's website he has wheel building advise check his home page here on the forum
