Mavic Wheels and Free Hub Bodies

Posted on
  • I have a pair of Mavic Aksium Race wheels, with a campag freehub body....can i replace it with a standard shimano freehub body.Or do Mavic wheels have their own unique thread that would make this impossible?

  • Yep, just need to gety a Shimano freehub body and swap 'em over.

  • the standard ones i can get in a shop...no adaptors or nowt...that is remarkably unlike a big company!

  • Pretty certain not, it's only a matter of getting a cassette on isn't it. Obviously it'll have to be a Mavic one like.

  • so not the standard shimano freehub bodies i can buy to replace one on a standad shimano hub?

  • Dizzle, definitely have to be Mavic's own freehub body.
They sell two, one for Campagnolo and one for Shimano.

    Another companies freehub won't fit.

  • Aye - that is what I was trying to say.

  • bollocks.....thanks guys.....time to look for a shimano rear hub then....

  • I have some mavic helium wheels with a shimano 8 speed cassette on, I'm after a 9 speed campag one. Anyone know if me and mdizzle could swap (assuming he wanted to)?

  • would love to moog.....but will be impossibe.....unless you live near me in brasil!!Thanks for the offer though:)

  • In whcih case my answer is;

    technically - Yes,
    logistically - No.

  • I seem to remember that with shimano freehubs you could pop the allen key fitting out(the one that attaches it to the hub), any idea if this is possible with the mavic ones? Or is the whole fastening dfferent?
    Sorry for all the questions....

Seems not....oh well new wheel it is!

  • That's a bummer, but at least I know it's doable now. Previously I thought I would need to get a campag hub and rebuild the wheel.

  • Just looked into prices and its cheaper to do a new shimano hub and wheel build than buy the free hub body!!
Man there are times when living in Brasil has it's downfalls......

It often ends up like that though - the spare parts are stupidly expensive. Had to replace the freehub on a pair of shimano rh550s. £30 which i thought was ridiculous considering the whole wheelset is only about £100 or so.
Have also had to shell out £70 for a campag freehub body for a pair of dt-swiss240s, its only a bit of machined aluminium with some cartridge bearings inside.
