  • Sup peeps?
Im planning on getting a bike tool kit in an well serious effort to get me familiar with repairing and maintaining my own ride.
My question is, which of the following would you choose (they all have near enough the same components o and my budget is up to £40):

    J-Tek Bike Tool Kit:

    £24.99

    CyclePro Bike Tool Kit:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CYCLEPRO-19-PIECE-BICYCLE-TOOL-KIT-RRP-%a349.99--CPT517_W0QQitemZ250399689330QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
    £23.99

    The Drapers Bike Tool kit:

    £37.94

or the Halfords Bike Tool Kit:
    (no piccy for this one)
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&partNumber=952259&langId=-1&cm_mmc=Googlebase-_-Bike%20Accessories%20&%20Clothing/Bike%20Workshop%20&%20Tools-_-Na-_-Halfords%20Essential%20Bike%20Tool%20Kit&%24%24tid=atUnF-AdUszY61Mdgy7JJAZWHUesLErikA8KSa3M9mNc5ppK_brvVgn57rdPjo_z
    £26.99

If there any you'd avoid, please let me know, coz im thinking about the cheapest one.. thnx in advance!

  • Avoid cheap tools as they are cheap for a reason.

Your best bet is to buy a decent quality tools, i.e. Park, as you need them.

    +1.

I'd give serious thought to the value of the bike I was working on before buying cheap tools.

  • i will say the J-Tek and the The Drapers, is the same one, just different colour.

and I agree with Andy, but good quality tools, is better in long run

True that. Those toolkits probably have the same tools in differently-shaped boxes. Any of them would be fine as a starter, and then you can get better ones as they fall apart.

  • ??????

  • a set of tools?

I seem to remember a few people buying this as a starter kit
but as the other guys say, I've bought stuff as I've needed it, hubjub have some nice indivdual tools like the DA chain whip and the chain breaker, which have been great investments.

  • The picture is MC Serch - I think Gerald is making a subtle point that's lost on most of us.

  • set of tools FTW

  • park are so unbelievably overpriced its stupid. spanners and stuff, buy generic halfords or whatever.
Only splash out of the specific stuff like BB removers and chain extractor freewheel removers etc, cos otherwise it'll mess up your components.

Super B are a cheaper alternative to Park that are equivalent in quality any day.

  • kit 1 and 3 are the same, also exactly the same as the one available from lidl now, can't remember for how much though. you will regret it.

@coppi- what the hell is serch up to now, where is that pic from?

    classic

  • You can get away with some tools cheap as mentioned above - it's probably better to have the cheap ones to hand first and just upgrade as necessary. You'll spend a fortune on park (overpriced as US made) and still end up with huge gaps in your toolbox for things that only need using occasionally so quality isn't paramount.

For example, I got the large lifeline set a few years back and whilst there are some shitty bits, many have proved to be great (only replaced the chain tool, pedal/25mm box spanner, chainring bolt tool and spoke key, the rest has been golden).
Get some reasonable quality all-purpose tools like spanners/pliers etc. from halfords to go with it and job done.

Can I also add this to the mix? Reason being that they were recommended to me recently as being of particularly high quality for a 'selection box'.

quality of some bits is the same but alot of the stuff is better quality

i use it plenty enough and cant complain

  • Yo i picked up that very same kit in the Evans store earlier - you wont believe how small & how light it weighs. Hardcore but a bit pricey still !

    • 1

Or better still go to a mechanic. They have all the tools so you don't have to buy any. RESULT!

  • its a good kit if you ask me. And good at that price. But saying that i paid trade for it

  • I can help you start your collection with two lovely, solid, long-handled hex wrenches, 5mm and 6mm, yours for £2.50 posted.

  • thanks for teh offer sharkster!
I reckon im gona get the SuperB Kit tho...
    peace

Exactly the same as the Wiggle one. Just branded differently and costing more.

Shimano tools are usually very good value, I have a 15mm Snap-On spanner, it's the best thing since sliced bread and eager virgins.

  • i've been planning on getting a full kit but i think i'm just gonna get the individual bits as suggested. the last thing i need is more spanners and tyre levers!

  • I've had no problems with the light use of my Lifeline tool set from Wiggle. I buy the odd Park tool for random bits (like 17mm cone spanners).

  • YO!!
I just bought the Tool Kit from Lidl -£19.99!
    BONZA :-)
will let you know how it goes...

  • The Lidl toolkit isn't that great, be careful not to strip any bolts on the bike you're working on! But still, at £20, it's definitely worth it.
