Fixed sprocket on a freewheel hub

Posted on
  • Hi,

I picked up some wheels from ebay and it turns out they are for freewheel sprocket and not fixed. How likely is a massive failure if i just loctite the fixed sprocket and lockring onto the hub?

Also if i do loctite it on and decide to change sprockets is it possible to replace or would I be destined to ride forever the first sprocket that goes on?

    Thanks

    Phil

  • search the forum for "suicide hub" - that will tell you everything you need to know

  • i have several glued cogs, i used an industrial superglue, they have not come off.....yet anyway.

they can be removed by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotafix

  • do you skid much fruit?

  • Looks like opinions are fairly mixed so far. Some for, some against. No one seems to have lost a testicle using it this way so far though

  • I'd recommend getting a different hub with the correct lockring thread.

But then I know a polish messenger who rides brakeless with a suicide hub and no foot retention. My point, this highlights that it is possible but it doesn't mean that you should risk it yourself.

  • It was a polish messenger that told me about the loctite thing in the first place!

  • i do skid much, its the only way i slow myself down, i advise at least a front brake tho just in case it does come off you can at least stop

  • I used no lock-ring for a good couple of years - that's with brakes and no skidding. It's only suicide if you insist on either going brakeless or burning through a tire every month just for the fun of it.

  • It works absolutely fine if you don't skid. If you skid you can unscrew the cog. Rotafixing the cog on TIGHT will minimise the possibility of this. Always a good idea to run a front brake regardless, doubly so with this setup. I would have no problem with it as long as you have a brake (both my fixed bikes are set up this way and I tend to skid with hands on the brake hoods.) If you do unscrew the cog you just lose your breaking, it is not otherwise catastrophic. As you should not be skidding for emergency stops you will generally then have time to use your front brake instead when this happens.
