"Off to get a lockring fitted on Tuesday' is pretty scary!! You should already have one fitted!
I would imagine skidding on that ration would be tricky.
Search for gear inches, I think the general consensus is 70 or there abouts is good for town. -
• #3
87 inches will be difficult to skid and not very responsive in stop/start traffic, unless you have legs like Godzilla and carbon fibre knees.
i endorse ~70 inches.

I thought only Fiddy had Carbon Fibre Knees!?

Im not currently riding the bike without a lockring.
I rode it previously with this gear on the old wheelset and it felt like a reasonable gear (if a little long). I ride a fair amount of miles daily and have strong legs -
• #6
i can hardly skid on my 78GI without feeling my knees go a bit wobbl-di-woo.
87GI would tear them apart me thinks :)defo get brakes too if your riding that beast.

I have a front brake currently installed.
Ill get the lockring sorted and ride it to work and back, can always get a new ring if need be

I'm currently running 63.6 so what do I know!? :)

ffs your a hipster trickster, and that is too low

46x19 Not too low bro. Just nice n spinny!
-
• #11
Perhaps too spinny ¬_¬
Ive got my eye on you Dunx.

Thats really pretty high for a commute, especially a lengthy one.
Like others have said, around 70 is good for the city. For long distance, lower is even better.

Shud I be scared or flattered?

I just set up a new bike with 77" gearing compared to my usual 69". No way could or would I skid with the 77". Mind you it doesn't seem to make skip stopping any more difficult and since I have a front brake hasn't meant that I ride any slower. But 86"? That's a big step up again and wou;d take some fun out of it for me. Having said that I have a buddy who rides 53x11 and reckons that suits him fine. He does weigh about 18 stone though.

fook me that's bigger than most peope train on at Herne hill
-
• #16
Try a 54 to 12 ratio ;o)))))
-
• #17
When I was young and had no care for my knees I pushed 91... but it was 45 x 13 (with a brake of course). I messengered on that for a few years and found it pretty ideal.
-
• #18
I run 48 x 14 which is 90.1" - I ride it around London all the time, no problems, but I grew up on big gears for no particularly good reason, it is what I am used to, feels normal.
And no I can't skid with that ratio, the only way I can lock up the back wheel, is by putting the front brake on a little so the back end lifts.

It's too low. You'll spin out. Try Gebhart for a decent chainring in the 60t-70t region.
-
• #20
I run 48:16 which comes out as 78.8", but then most of my commute is open roads. I find anything lower just too spinny. Mind you it takes patience and dedication to do the hilly bits.

I ride 97 gi back home from the track and can still skid. i live in a hilly city, but 70 gi seems way too spiny for me. It's probably doing me all sorts of harm grinding up hills

87.6" Gearing!
seems a huge gear for a general London commute.
it is.
whether you decide to change it to something suitable or not is up to you, as others have demonstrated.
I ride a tandem, solo with 120GI fixed with flat pedals, around Inverness 24 hours a day. I can skid fine, it's fine I tell you, FINE!

Really down to your natural riding style isn't it? I don't get on with anything above 70, currently running 59 on a Singlespeed but that is because it is mainly for offroad. Can still cruise along at 17mph even with that gear but admittedly it would do my head in if I had to ride on the road with it.
But for me, I would much rather use 59 than 87 so there is clearly no right answer. -

87.6" Gearing!
I'm off to get a lockring fitted on Tuesday, but its seems a huge gear for a general London commute.
As im pretty new to fixed riding, should i still be able to skid easily with this gear?
